Link building is a workflow, not a single tool. Every campaign goes through the same four steps: find prospects (sites that might link to you), find the right contact at each site, run the outreach, then track the relationship and check that the link stays live. Most tools in this guide are strong at one or two of those steps and weak or absent at the others, so the right choice depends on which step is your bottleneck.
This guide compares six tools across that workflow. Ahrefs, Semrush and Majestic are backlink data tools: they show who links to you and your competitors, which is where most prospect lists start. Hunter finds and verifies email addresses and sends sequences. Pitchbox and BuzzStream are outreach platforms built for link building: they manage prospects, emails, follow-ups and link monitoring in one place.
A few things matter more than feature lists when you choose:
- Data quality for prospecting. A bigger, fresher link index means more prospects and fewer dead ends. Plan gates matter too: some of the best prospecting reports sit on mid-tier plans.
- Seats and email accounts. Outreach tools often limit users, connected inboxes and monthly emails. A team of three can hit those caps quickly.
- Commitment terms. Some vendors bill month to month with no minimum; others require a one-year commitment even on monthly billing.
- How many tools you need. A solo link builder can often run on one data tool plus one contact tool. An agency usually wants an outreach platform on top.
Comparison Table
| Tool | Workflow step | Starting price | Free plan / trial | Best for | Standout feature |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ahrefs | Find prospects | $29/month (Starter); full tools from $129/month | Ahrefs Free for verified sites; no trial | Prospecting data | Content Explorer and broken backlinks (Standard) |
| Pitchbox | Outreach, tracking | $300/month, or $210/month billed annually | Trial via demo only | Agencies running outreach at scale | All-in-one workflow with SEO data integrations |
| BuzzStream | Outreach, tracking | $49/month | Free trial | Relationship tracking on a budget | Link building CRM, no minimum term |
| Hunter | Find contacts, outreach | Free; paid from $49/month ($34 billed yearly) | Free plan (50 credits/month) | Finding and verifying emails | Unlimited users on every plan |
| Semrush | Find prospects | Free; paid from $139/month | Free plan; 7-day trial | Teams already on Semrush | Backlink Gap for up to five competitors |
| Majestic | Find prospects | $49.99/month (ex VAT) | 7-day money-back guarantee | Cheap link metrics | Trust Flow and Topical Trust Flow |
The Link Building Workflow and Which Tool Covers Each Step
| Step | Ahrefs | Semrush | Majestic | Hunter | BuzzStream | Pitchbox |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Find prospects (backlink data) | Yes, core strength | Yes | Yes, core strength | No | Prospecting searches (30 to 1,000/month) | Prospecting searches plus Ahrefs, Semrush, Moz, Majestic data |
| 2. Find contacts | No | Via AI Backlink Builder app ($169/month extra) | No | Yes, core strength | Contact info discovery | Email Finder and verifier |
| 3. Run outreach | No | Link Building Tool; AI Backlink Builder app | No | Sequences | Yes (follow-ups from Growth) | Yes, with AI personalization |
| 4. Track relationships and links | No | Link Building Tool campaign tracking (limits unpublished) | No | No | CRM and link monitoring | CRM and link monitoring |
The pattern is clear. Ahrefs, Semrush and Majestic own step 1. Hunter owns step 2. BuzzStream and Pitchbox cover steps 2 to 4 and pull in data for step 1. That is why most link building stacks have two tools: one for data, one for outreach.
A Note on Respona
Respona was long sold as a self-serve outreach tool. As of October 2026 its pricing page no longer sells software plans. It now sells done-for-you link placements, priced per placement from $100 (publishers with DR 20+) to $500 (DR 60+), with content, outreach and publishing included. That is a service, not software, so it is not compared here. Respona's outreach software is also available as AI Backlink Builder, a Respona app inside the Semrush App Center that costs $169/month on its Starter plan, covered in the Semrush section below.
Ahrefs: Best for Prospecting Data
What it is
Ahrefs is an SEO suite built around a large backlink index. Ahrefs states 35 trillion external backlinks in its history, 494 billion pages in its index and 286 million domains. For link building, the useful parts are Site Explorer (who links to a site), Content Explorer (find pages on a topic and see who links to them), the broken backlinks report (pages your competitors lost links to, which make good replacement pitches) and Link Intersect (sites that link to several competitors but not to you).
Ahrefs has no outreach, email finding or CRM features. It finds prospects; you need another tool to contact them.
Pricing
- Ahrefs Free: $0, for sites you verify you own (formerly Ahrefs Webmaster Tools). Site Explorer and Site Audit for your own sites, with up to 1,000 backlinks visible at once. Useful for checking your own links, not for researching competitors.
- Starter: $29/month, monthly only. 200 credits/month and a reduced toolset. No extra users or add-ons. Its limits are described in a 2024 Ahrefs blog post, not on the current pricing page.
- Lite: $129/month ($1,290/year billed annually). 5 projects, 1,000 credits per user per month, 6 months of history. Up to 2 extra users at $40/month each.
- Standard: $249/month ($2,490/year). 20 projects, unlimited credits, 2 years of history. Adds Content Explorer, Batch Analysis and the broken backlinks report. Up to 5 extra users at $60/month each.
- Advanced: $449/month ($4,490/year). 50 projects, 5 years of history. Up to 10 extra users at $80/month each.
- Enterprise: $1,499/month with an annual commitment. From 3 users, unlimited history, uncapped API, SSO.
There is no free trial, Ahrefs says it never runs discounts, and refunds are only possible on monthly plans if you have not used the service.
On Link Intersect, Ahrefs' own help pages disagree: the plan comparison article lists it as a Standard feature, while the Link Intersect help article says it is on all paid plans. Check before you buy Lite for it.
Strengths
- Content Explorer and broken backlinks are two of the most direct ways to build a prospect list, and both are on Standard.
- Unlimited credits from Standard up, so heavy prospecting does not run into usage caps.
- API and MCP access from Lite, useful if you feed prospect lists into another tool.
- G2 rating of 4.5/5 from 720 reviews.
Weaknesses
- No outreach at all. You will pay for a second tool.
- The key link building reports are on Standard, so the real starting price for link building is $249/month, not $29.
- Lite's 1,000 credits per user per month can run out on busy prospecting days.
- Extra users cost $40 to $80/month each and are capped per plan.
Who it's for
In-house SEO teams and agencies that want the best prospect lists and are happy to run outreach in another tool. Skip it if you only need to contact a list you already have, or if your budget is under $100/month (look at Majestic plus Hunter).
Pitchbox: Best All-in-One Outreach Platform
What it is
Pitchbox is an outreach platform built for link building. It covers the whole workflow: prospecting searches, an email finder and verifier, outreach with follow-ups, a unified inbox, a CRM, link monitoring and reporting. It integrates with Ahrefs, Semrush, Moz and Majestic on every plan, so you can filter prospects by SEO metrics without leaving the tool. AI features (campaign assistant, personalization and a reply agent) are on every plan.
Pricing
| Pro | Advanced | Scale | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Billed monthly | $300/month | $600/month | $1,200/month |
| Billed annually | $210/month | $420/month | $825/month |
| Users | 2 | Unlimited | Unlimited |
| Email accounts | 2 | 6 | 20 |
| Outreach emails | 2,000/month | 5,000/month | 25,000/month |
| Prospecting searches | 1,000/month | 5,000/month | Unlimited |
| Contacts | 50K | 200K | Unlimited |
| Links monitored | 1K | 5K | 10K |
| Implementation fee | $2,000 | $3,000 | $4,000 |
The fine print matters here. Every plan needs a one-year commitment, even with monthly billing. The expert-led implementation fee ($2,000 to $4,000) is waived only when you pay annually. Enterprise Platform (SSO, SLA, security review) is priced on request. Free trials exist but are arranged through a sales demo; there is no self-serve free plan.
Strengths
- Covers prospecting, contacts, outreach and link tracking in one place, so a team does not juggle spreadsheets between tools.
- SEO data integrations with Ahrefs, Semrush, Moz and Majestic on every plan.
- Unlimited users from Advanced, which suits agencies with many outreach staff.
- White-label client reports, email rotation and deliverability monitoring from Advanced.
Weaknesses
- The highest starting price here. The cheapest way in is $2,520/year (Pro billed annually).
- One-year commitment on every plan, with no month-to-month option.
- Pro is capped at 2 users and 2 email accounts.
- No self-serve trial: you have to book a demo.
Who it's for
Agencies and in-house teams running outreach as a core channel, with several people sending pitches every week. Skip it if you run one campaign a quarter or cannot commit to a year.
BuzzStream: Best for Relationship Tracking
What it is
BuzzStream is a link building and PR CRM. It keeps contacts, emails and conversation history together, so a team can see who has already pitched a publisher and what happened. It also finds contact information, tracks opens, clicks and replies, runs prospecting searches and monitors links. BuzzStream also sells ListIQ, a separate Chrome extension for building media lists, priced on its own from $24/month.
Pricing
| Plan | Price | Users | Extra user | Contacts | Links monitored | Prospecting searches |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | $49/month | 1 | Not stated | 500 | 1,000 | 30 |
| Growth | $174/month | 3 | $58/month | 25,000 | 25,000 | 250 |
| Professional | $424/month | 6 | $70/month | 100,000 | 100,000 | 1,000 |
| Custom | From $999/month | 12+ | 300,000+ |
Plans are monthly with no minimum term. Paying 12 months in advance gets one month free (you email customer service after signing up to arrange it). Every plan offers a free trial; the pricing page does not state the length. You may see older prices quoted elsewhere, such as Solo at $19 or Plus at $99. Those plans are not shown on BuzzStream's current pricing page.
Plan gates to note: bulk sending, scheduling, automated follow-ups, the Ahrefs integration and phone support start on Growth. Team performance reporting, the API and a dedicated account manager start on Professional.
Strengths
- Month-to-month billing with no minimum term, unlike Pitchbox's one-year commitment.
- Built around relationships: shared contact history and permissions help stop two people pitching the same site.
- Growth includes 3 users for $174/month, cheaper than Pitchbox for a small team.
- Link monitoring on every plan, up to 100,000 links on Professional.
Weaknesses
- Starter is limited: 1 user, 500 contacts and no automated follow-ups or bulk sending.
- The Ahrefs integration starts on Growth, and the pricing page does not mention Moz, Semrush or Majestic.
- Prospecting searches are capped at 30 to 1,000 per month, so you still want a backlink data tool.
- Trial length is not stated on its pricing page.
Who it's for
Small link building teams, digital PR teams and agencies that care most about tracking relationships and want no long contract. Skip Starter if you need follow-up automation; budget for Growth instead.
Hunter: Best for Finding Contacts
What it is
Hunter finds and verifies email addresses. Domain Search lists the addresses at a domain, Email Finder finds one person's address, and Email Verifier checks whether an address will bounce. Hunter now calls itself an all-in-one outreach platform: the feature formerly called Campaigns is now Sequences, with follow-ups, A/B testing, open and link tracking and email account rotation. It also includes Discover, a B2B company database with AI search.
Hunter has no backlink data and no link monitoring. It solves step 2 of the workflow and can handle step 3 for simple campaigns.
Pricing
| Free | Starter | Growth | Scale | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Billed monthly | $0 | $49/month | $149/month | $299/month |
| Billed yearly | $0 | $34/month ($408/year) | $104/month ($1,248/year) | $209/month ($2,508/year) |
| Credits | 50/month | 2,000/month | 10,000/month | 25,000/month |
| Connected email accounts | 1 | 3 | 10 | 20 |
| Recipients per sequence | 500 | 2,500 | 5,000 | 15,000 |
Every plan lists unlimited users. Credits pay for Email Finder, Domain Search and Email Verifier. Monthly credits reset and do not roll over; yearly plans get all credits up front. Hunter's pricing page and help center describe Domain Search credit use differently, so test your own volume on the free plan before choosing a tier. Extra email accounts cost from $10/month each. Enterprise is priced on request.
Strengths
- A real free plan (50 credits/month) to test data quality on your own niche.
- Unlimited users on every plan, which makes it cheap for teams.
- Verification built in, which protects sender reputation on cold outreach.
- Sequences cover basic outreach, so a solo link builder can skip a separate outreach tool.
Weaknesses
- No backlink data, so it cannot build a link prospect list on its own.
- No link monitoring or link building CRM.
- Credit use for Domain Search is described differently on two Hunter pages.
- Per-plan feature gating is shown with icons on the pricing page, so some limits are hard to confirm before you sign up.
Who it's for
Anyone who already has a prospect list and needs the right email address for each site. It pairs well with Ahrefs or Majestic for solo link builders. Skip it if you are buying Pitchbox, which includes its own email finder.
Semrush: Best If You Already Use Semrush
What it is
Semrush is an all-in-one SEO suite, now owned by Adobe (the deal closed on 28 April 2026). Semrush states 43 trillion backlinks and 390 million referring domains in its database. For link building it offers backlink research, Backlink Gap (compare your links against up to five competitors), Backlink Audit and a Link Building Tool.
Semrush's 2025 blog describes the Link Building Tool as finding prospects from target keywords and competitors, sending outreach with follow-up sequences from inside Semrush, and tracking campaigns. Its current link building feature page now promotes Backlink Gap and the AI PR Toolkit instead, and the 2026 pricing pages do not list Link Building Tool limits, so confirm what your plan includes during the trial.
There is also AI Backlink Builder, an app built by Respona inside the Semrush App Center. It is a separate subscription at $169/month on its Starter plan, with 2 email accounts, 10,000 monthly data credits and 30,000 active contacts. It is not included in any Semrush plan.
Pricing
Semrush has changed its plan names. The old Pro, Guru and Business plans are gone from the pricing page.
- Free: $0, 10 reports per day, 1 demo project, no card needed.
- SEO: $139/month ($117.33/month billed annually). 5 websites, 500 tracked keywords.
- Starter (SEO + AI Search): $199/month ($165.17/month billed annually). 5 websites, adds competitor insights tools and AI search tracking.
- Pro+: $299/month ($248.17/month billed annually). 15 websites, historical data.
- Advanced and Enterprise: custom pricing.
Every plan includes one user. Extra users cost $45/month on Starter and $80/month on Pro+; the extra-user price for the SEO plan is not stated. There is a 7-day free trial (card needed). Monthly plans are not refundable.
Strengths
- Backlink data and keyword research in one subscription, so link building and content planning share one tool.
- Backlink Gap sends prospects straight into a Link Building project.
- A free plan and a 7-day trial (Ahrefs has no trial).
- G2 rating of 4.4/5 from 4,275 reviews.
Weaknesses
- The Link Building Tool's current plan limits are not published on Semrush's 2026 pages.
- The full outreach app (AI Backlink Builder) is another $169/month.
- Extra users cost $45 to $80/month each.
- No refunds on month-to-month plans.
Who it's for
Teams that already pay for Semrush for keyword research or rank tracking and want to add link prospecting without another data subscription. Skip it if link building is your main job and you want dedicated outreach features; Pitchbox or BuzzStream do that better.
Majestic: Best Budget Backlink Data
What it is
Majestic is a backlink data tool. It has no email finder and no outreach, and its keyword tools are limited to a Keyword Checker and, on Pro, Search Explorer. Its own metrics are Trust Flow and Topical Trust Flow, which groups sites by topic to show "in which industry sector the website has influence". Link Context shows where a link sits on the page (top, middle or bottom), which helps judge whether a link is editorial.
Majestic runs two indexes. The Fresh Index covers links seen in the last 120 days and aims to update daily. The Historic Index covers links back to 2006, but its own footer says it was last updated on 3 May 2024 (covering data up to 26 March 2024), even though the FAQ still says it updates monthly. Treat the Historic Index as frozen and rely on the Fresh Index for current prospecting.
Pricing
| Lite | Pro | API | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Billed monthly | $49.99/month | $99.99/month | $399.99/month |
| Billed annually | $499.99/year | $999.99/year | $3,999.90/year |
| Users | 1 | 1 | 5 |
| Indexes | Fresh only | Fresh + Historic | Fresh + Historic |
| Rows per Site Explorer search | 5,000 | 30,000 | 50,000 |
Prices exclude VAT. Lite and Pro have a 7-day money-back guarantee for first-time subscribers. No free trial is stated, though you can sign up for a free account with limits Majestic does not publish.
Pro adds Clique Hunter (sites linking to several competitors, Majestic's version of a link intersect), raw data exports, custom reports and email alerts. Lite has no exports, which limits it for building outreach lists.
Strengths
- A low entry price for a full backlink tool: $49.99/month, or $41.67/month on annual billing. (Ahrefs Starter is $29/month but limited to 200 credits.)
- Trust Flow and Topical Trust Flow help filter prospects by topic relevance, not just authority.
- Clique Hunter on Pro ($99.99/month) for competitor link gap prospecting.
Weaknesses
- Historic Index last updated in May 2024.
- Only 1 user on Lite and Pro, with no extra-user price stated; the $399.99/month API plan includes 5.
- No exports on Lite.
- No outreach or contact finding, and only light keyword tools.
Who it's for
Solo link builders and small teams on a tight budget who want link metrics and a competitor link gap tool for under $100/month. Skip it if you need several users or recent historic data.
Cost Examples: Solo Link Builder vs a 3-Person Team
These examples use only published list prices from each vendor's pricing page in October 2026. They exclude tax (Majestic prices exclude VAT) and any usage overages.
A one-person outreach program
One person finds prospects, finds emails and sends sequences.
| Stack | Monthly billing | Annual billing |
|---|---|---|
| Majestic Lite + Hunter Starter | $49.99 + $49 = $98.99/month | $499.99 + $408 = $907.99/year |
| Ahrefs Lite + Hunter Starter | $129 + $49 = $178/month | $1,290 + $408 = $1,698/year |
| Ahrefs Standard + Hunter Starter | $249 + $49 = $298/month | $2,490 + $408 = $2,898/year |
| Pitchbox Pro (alone) | $300/month with a one-year commitment: $300 x 12 + $2,000 implementation = $5,600 in year one | $210 x 12 = $2,520/year (implementation included) |
The cheapest working stack costs about $99/month, but Majestic Lite has no exports, so expect to copy prospects by hand. Ahrefs Lite plus Hunter Starter at $178/month is the practical middle. If you want Content Explorer and broken backlinks, Ahrefs Standard pushes it to $298/month. Pitchbox Pro on annual billing ($2,520/year) costs less than Ahrefs Standard plus Hunter on annual billing ($2,898/year) and covers outreach, CRM and link monitoring too, but it does not replace a backlink data subscription if you want to research competitors in depth.
A 3-person link building team
Three people share prospecting and outreach. Each person gets a seat on every tool. Ahrefs, Semrush, Hunter and BuzzStream use monthly billing because extra-user prices are published per month; the Pitchbox row uses its annual price.
| Stack | Arithmetic | Monthly total | Yearly total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ahrefs Lite (3 users) + Hunter Growth | ($129 + 2 x $40) + $149 | $358 | $4,296 |
| Semrush Starter (3 users) + Hunter Growth | ($199 + 2 x $45) + $149 | $438 | $5,256 |
| Ahrefs Standard (3 users) + BuzzStream Growth | ($249 + 2 x $60) + $174 | $543 | $6,516 |
| Ahrefs Standard (3 users) + Pitchbox Advanced (annual) | ($249 + 2 x $60) + $420 | $789 | $9,468 |
Notes on each row:
- Ahrefs Lite + Hunter Growth is the cheapest, but Lite gives each user only 1,000 credits per month and lacks Content Explorer and broken backlinks. Hunter Growth includes unlimited users and 10 email accounts.
- Semrush Starter + Hunter Growth suits a team that also needs keyword research. Add $169/month if you want the AI Backlink Builder app.
- Ahrefs Standard + BuzzStream Growth gives the full Ahrefs prospecting toolset and a shared CRM with automated follow-ups. BuzzStream Growth includes exactly 3 users; a fourth costs $58/month.
- Ahrefs Standard + Pitchbox Advanced is the full professional stack: unlimited Pitchbox users, 6 email accounts and 5,000 outreach emails per month. Pitchbox billed monthly would be $600/month instead of $420, raising the total to $969/month, plus a $3,000 implementation fee.
How to Choose a Link Building Tool
Start from your bottleneck.
If you struggle to find good prospects, buy backlink data first. Ahrefs Standard is the strongest option here because of Content Explorer and the broken backlinks report. Semrush is worth a look if you also want keyword research and daily rank tracking in the same subscription. Majestic is the budget choice, with the caveat that its Historic Index stopped updating in 2024.
If you have prospects but cannot reach the right person, add Hunter. The free plan lets you test it on your own niche. Its unlimited users make it cheap for teams.
If outreach is getting messy, with duplicate pitches, lost replies or forgotten follow-ups, you need a CRM. BuzzStream is the flexible choice: monthly billing, no minimum, 3 users on Growth. Pitchbox is the choice for higher volume and agencies, if you can commit to a year.
If you are an agency, look at Pitchbox Advanced for unlimited users, 25 workspaces and white-label client reports. BuzzStream Professional ($424/month for 6 users) costs less than Pitchbox Advanced on monthly billing ($600) and has no minimum term.
Some practical checks before you buy:
- Count seats and inboxes. Pitchbox Pro and BuzzStream Starter are small (2 users and 1 user). Hunter allows unlimited users. Ahrefs and Semrush charge per extra user.
- Read the commitment terms. Pitchbox needs a year on every plan. BuzzStream and Hunter are month to month. Ahrefs and Semrush monthly plans are effectively non-refundable.
- Check plan gates for the reports you need. Ahrefs Content Explorer and broken backlinks need Standard. BuzzStream follow-ups need Growth. Majestic exports need Pro.
- Use trials and free plans. Hunter, Semrush and Ahrefs (for your own sites) have free tiers. Semrush has a 7-day trial. BuzzStream has a free trial. Pitchbox trials go through a demo.
