Why Choosing a Print-on-Demand Service Matters in 2026
A print-on-demand (POD) service prints your designs only after a customer orders, then packs and ships the item under your store's name. You never hold stock. That sounds like a commodity, but the service you choose sets three numbers that decide whether the business works: your cost per item, how long buyers wait, and how often things arrive wrong.
The gaps are real. On October 16, 2026, the same Bella+Canvas 3001 t-shirt cost $11.92 at Printful and anywhere from $11.29 to $18.58 across the 19 print providers that offer it on Printify. With a Printify Premium subscription, the cheapest option dropped to $8.95. Production times range from Spreadconnect's 48 hours for most orders to 4 to 7 business days at Teelaunch. Some services run their own factories, others route your order to a partner you may never hear of.
The market has also shifted. Spring, the creator platform once called Teespring, is shutting down: selling tools ended on September 15, 2026 and account access ended October 15, 2026. SPOD now sells as Spreadconnect. Gooten has moved its fulfillment network into a new order-management platform called OrderMesh. Printify raised its Premium plan from $29 to $39 a month in February.
This guide compares six services that connect to your own store (Shopify, Etsy, WooCommerce and others) and fulfill orders for you: Printful, Printify, Gelato, Gooten, Spreadconnect (formerly SPOD) and Teelaunch. Every price below was checked on the vendor's own site or app listing in October 2026 and is in US dollars.
Printful review
What it is: Printful prints, packs and ships products from facilities it runs itself: Charlotte and the Dallas area in the US, Tijuana in Mexico (serving US orders), Mississauga in Canada, Wolverhampton in the UK, the Barcelona area in Spain and Riga in Latvia. Partner facilities in Japan, Brazil and Australia handle selected products locally. Printful routes each order automatically; you cannot pick the facility.
Pricing: The Free plan has no monthly fee, unlimited stores and 10 Quick Stores (simple hosted shops). Growth costs $24.99/month, comes with a 14-day trial and becomes free once you reach $12K in yearly sales. It takes up to 33% off product prices, 9% off branding and 25% off samples. Enterprise is custom priced.
You pay per order. The Bella+Canvas 3001 tee is $11.92 in sizes S to XL with one front print, $13.92 in 2XL and $19.92 in 5XL. A back print adds $5.95, a sleeve print $2.49. US standard shipping for a tee is $4.95 for the first item and $2.20 for each extra item. Printful says it takes 2 to 5 business days to make a product and fulfill an order.
Key features:
- 584 products, with DTG, DTF and embroidery on core apparel such as the 3001
- Free Design Maker and Mockup Generator
- Printed inside labels ($0.99) and outside labels ($2.49), plus white-label packaging
- Integrations with Shopify, Etsy, Amazon, eBay, TikTok Shop, WooCommerce, Squarespace, Wix and BigCommerce
- Free reprint or refund for damaged, defective or misprinted items reported within 30 days of delivery, with no need to send the item back
Pros: One company owns production, so a hoodie made in Charlotte and one made in Riga follow the same process. Prices for labels, placements and embroidery are listed in the open. The integration list is the broadest in this group and includes Amazon.
Cons: The catalog is less than a third the size of Printify's. Base prices are not the lowest; several Printify providers undercut the 3001 tee. The 2 to 5 business day fulfillment window is slower than Spreadconnect's 48 hours.
Who should use it: Brands that care about consistent quality and a branded unboxing, and owners who would rather not compare print shops.
Who should avoid it: Sellers competing mostly on price in crowded niches, where a dollar per shirt decides profit.
Printify review
What it is: Printify is a marketplace. It does not print most items itself. Instead, it lists independent print providers (140+ facilities in total), each with its own price, location, speed and quality score. You choose a provider per product, or use Printify Choice, which routes orders to a provider based on price, quality score and distance to the customer.
Pricing: The Free plan covers 5 stores and unlimited designs. Premium costs $39/month or $299/year (shown as $24.99/month). It gives up to 20% off all products and up to 33% off new products, up to 33% off custom branding, 10 stores, AI Mockups and the Printify Connect order tool. The monthly price rose from $29 to $39 on February 17, 2026; the annual price did not change. Premium is non-refundable. Enterprise is custom.
For the Bella+Canvas 3001 tee, 19 providers offered it on October 16, 2026, from $11.29 (Printify Choice) to $18.58. Premium prices start at $8.95. Printful itself appears as a provider on Printify at $14.54, which is more than Printful charges directly. Printify Choice ships the tee in the US for $4.95 (standard, 2 to 5 business days) plus $2.40 per extra item, or $3.99 by economy.
Key features:
- 2,000+ products across 140+ facilities
- Provider scores for quality, production speed and shipping in the catalog
- Average production time shown per provider (for the 3001, from 0.7 to 2.6 business days)
- Integrations with Shopify, Etsy, eBay, Amazon, TikTok Shop (US), WooCommerce, Squarespace, Wix, BigCommerce, Big Cartel and PrestaShop
- Free reprint or refund for damaged or misprinted items reported within 30 days of delivery
Pros: The lowest per-item cost in this group. Huge catalog. You can switch providers when one slips.
Cons: Quality, branding options (neck labels, inserts) and speed vary by provider. You need to order samples from each provider you plan to use. The Free plan caps you at 5 stores.
Who should use it: Sellers with tight margins, large catalogs, or a willingness to test providers.
Who should avoid it: Owners who want one consistent standard and no provider decisions.
Gelato review
What it is: Gelato routes each order to a print partner near the buyer. Its help center lists more than 140 production hubs in 32 countries, from the US and Brazil to Germany, India, Japan and Australia. That makes it strongest when your customers are spread across many countries.
Pricing: The Free plan charges only for products and shipping and allows 2 connected stores and 2 users. Gelato+ costs $29.99/month or $239.88/year ($19.99/month) with a 14-day trial (discounts do not apply during the trial). It raises limits to 10 stores and 5 users and adds up to 33% off products in listed markets (including the US, Canada, UK, Germany, France and Australia), premium mockups, 250 premium fonts, and live shipping rates and express shipping in Shopify. Gelato's pricing page blocked our checks, so any higher tiers are left out.
Key features:
- Local production in 32 countries
- Strong in wall art, posters, cards and other paper products, plus apparel
- Integrations with Shopify, Etsy, WooCommerce, Wix, Squarespace and BigCommerce, plus Order Desk and an API
- Branded labels and packaging inserts (posters, on Gelato+)
- Damaged or defective items replaced at Gelato's cost if reported within 30 days; no returns
Pros: Shorter shipping distances abroad. Gelato+ costs less per month than Printify Premium. Good choice for art and print shops.
Cons: Only 2 stores on the free plan. Refunds go to a Gelato Wallet balance. If a local partner cannot print a given placement, the order can be made in another country.
Who should use it: Artists and shops selling posters, canvas and cards to buyers in Europe, Asia-Pacific or Latin America.
Who should avoid it: US-only apparel brands, where Printful or Printify give more apparel choice.
Gooten review
What it is: Gooten runs a managed network of vetted manufacturers. It states an average of 1.8 production days, 3.8 shipping days, 500+ product lines and 70+ routing locations, and claims 99% accuracy with an under-3-day production target. Its fulfillment network now operates inside OrderMesh, Gooten's new order-management platform.
Pricing: No subscription. The Shopify app is free to install, and charges cover production and shipping. Some charges can be billed by OrderMesh Inc.
Key features:
- Large home and lifestyle catalog: blankets, candles, drinkware, pet products, wall art
- Integrations with Shopify, Etsy, TikTok Shop, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Order Desk and an API
- Self-service reprints with photo evidence, requested within about 4 weeks of delivery
Pros: No fee. Wide range beyond t-shirts. API and OrderMesh suit larger businesses with custom order flows.
Cons: Gooten's Shopify app holds a 3.3 rating from 147 reviews (October 2026), and recent reviews describe wrong items and refunds in place of replacements. The company's attention is moving toward OrderMesh, so the self-serve product may change.
Who should use it: Gift and home decor stores with steady volume, and teams that will integrate by API.
Who should avoid it: Beginners who need hands-on support.
Spreadconnect (formerly SPOD) review
What it is: Spreadconnect is the print-on-demand fulfillment service of Spreadshirt (Spread Group), formerly sold as SPOD. Unlike Printify or Gelato, it prints in its own factories: Leipzig in Germany, Krupka in Czechia and Legnica in Poland for Europe, and Las Vegas for North America.
Pricing: Free. Spreadconnect says it "is and always will be free of charge". You pay product and shipping costs per order.
Key features:
- 95% of orders produced and shipped within 48 hours
- 250+ products, printed with digital print, sublimation, DTF and flex or flock
- Integrations with Shopify, TikTok Shop, WooCommerce, Squarespace, Magento, Shopware, Order Desk and an API
- Reprint or refund for misprinted, damaged or wrong items, claimed within 30 days of delivery with a photo
Pros: Fast and free, with production you can trace to named factories.
Cons: You pick one production region (US or EU) at sign-up and cannot change it; serving both needs two accounts and two stores. No direct Etsy or Wix integration. Its Shopify app holds a 3.8 rating from 139 reviews (October 2026).
Who should use it: Apparel brands selling mainly in Europe or mainly in the US that want speed without a subscription.
Who should avoid it: Etsy sellers and anyone needing local production on several continents.
Teelaunch review
What it is: Teelaunch is a US print-on-demand company working with partner facilities in Phoenix, Louisville and Beltsville in the US, Newton Abbot in the UK, Prague in Czechia and Melbourne in Australia. We added it in place of Spring, which is closing (see the FAQ).
Pricing: Free. The Shopify app includes unlimited designs, unlimited stores, a mockup generator and manual orders. You pay per order.
Key features:
- Unusual products: cutting boards, sport balls, yard signs, jigsaw puzzles, headphones, alongside apparel and drinkware
- Launchpad dashboard: swap variants, update artwork, hold or release pending orders
- Integrations with Shopify, Etsy, WooCommerce, TikTok Shop, Order Desk and an API
- Published production times by product, updated September 29, 2026
Pros: No fees or store cap. Distinct catalog. Being able to fix artwork on a pending order saves reprints.
Cons: Apparel takes 4 to 7 business days to produce, canvas 5 to 9. Its Shopify app shows 4.3 from 114 reviews, with 18% one-star (October 2026).
Who should use it: Gift shops and niche merch sellers who want products the big catalogs lack.
Who should avoid it: Sellers whose buyers expect fast delivery on t-shirts.
Head-to-Head Comparison
Ease of use. Printful and Printify have the most polished design tools. Printful's Design Maker and Mockup Generator are free; Printify's Product Creator is free, with AI Mockups on Premium. Printify adds a decision Printful does not: which provider. Printify Choice removes that step at the cost of some control. Gelato is simple but feature-gated on the free plan. Gooten, Spreadconnect and Teelaunch are functional rather than polished.
Features. Printful leads on branding (priced labels, white-label packaging, embroidery and DTF on core blanks). Printify leads on choice (2,000+ products). Gelato leads on geography (32 countries). Spreadconnect leads on speed (48 hours for 95% of orders). Teelaunch leads on odd products.
Pricing value. For a single front-print Bella+Canvas 3001 tee shipped in the US, Printful costs $11.92 plus $4.95 shipping ($16.87). Printify Choice costs $11.29 plus $4.95 ($16.24) on the free plan and $9.04 plus $4.95 ($13.99) on Premium. At 20 shirts a month, Premium's $39 fee is about $1.95 per shirt, so it saves money only above roughly 17 shirts a month at the monthly rate, or about 11 at the yearly rate, on this product alone.
Integrations. Printful and Printify both cover Shopify, Etsy, Amazon, eBay, TikTok Shop, WooCommerce, Squarespace, Wix and BigCommerce. Gelato's help center lists six direct integrations (Shopify, Etsy, WooCommerce, Wix, Squarespace, BigCommerce), without Amazon or eBay. Spreadconnect has no direct Etsy link. Teelaunch and Gooten cover Shopify, Etsy, WooCommerce and TikTok Shop.
Learning curve. Lowest at Printful (one supplier). Moderate at Printify (provider choice). Spreadconnect is easy but has the one-region rule to plan around.
Fees. Printful, Spreadconnect, Gooten and Teelaunch need no subscription. Printify Premium ($39/month) and Gelato+ ($29.99/month) are optional and pay off through product discounts at volume. Printful Growth ($24.99/month) becomes free at $12K a year in sales.
Quality control. This is where business models matter most. Printful and Spreadconnect print in facilities they run, so one set of machines, blanks and checks applies to every order. Printify, Gelato, Gooten and Teelaunch rely on partner printers. Printify is the most open about it: each provider in its catalog carries scores for quality, production speed, shipping and courtesy, so you can avoid weak providers before you list a product. Gooten says it vets its manufacturers and claims 99% order accuracy. Gelato routes to what it calls certified print partners. With any network, the provider behind your order can change, so re-order samples when you switch.
Shipping and delivery. Published US rates for a single tee are close: $4.95 standard at both Printful and Printify Choice, with extra items at $2.20 (Printful) or $2.40 (Printify Choice). Printify Choice also offers economy shipping at $3.99 with a 4 to 8 business day window, and quotes 2 to 5 business days for standard. Shipping abroad is where networks pull ahead. Printify Choice charges $10.39 to ship the 3001 from the US to the rest of the world, which is why local production matters. Gelato, Printful's European facilities and Printify's EU providers keep those orders local.
Returns. No service here accepts returns for wrong size or change of mind, because each item is made to order. Your store policy has to cover those cases, often by offering a discount on a new order. Printful, Printify, Gelato and Spreadconnect reprint or refund misprinted and damaged items reported within 30 days of delivery, and Gooten within about 4 weeks. Teelaunch did not publish its policy on the pages we checked, so ask before you commit.
How to Choose: Decision Framework
- Where are your buyers? Mostly US: Printful, Printify or Spreadconnect US. Mostly Europe: Printful (Spain, Latvia), Spreadconnect EU or Gelato. Spread worldwide: Gelato.
- What are you selling? Apparel with branding: Printful. Large varied catalog: Printify. Wall art and paper: Gelato. Home goods: Gooten. Unusual gifts: Teelaunch.
- How thin are your margins? Price your bestseller at each service, including shipping. If the gap is over $1 per item and you sell more than 20 a month, Printify Premium is worth testing.
- How much control do you want? One accountable supplier: Printful or Spreadconnect. Willing to manage providers: Printify.
- Which sales channels? Check the exact integration. Etsy sellers should skip Spreadconnect; Amazon sellers should look at Printful or Printify.
- Order samples. Order your bestseller from each service you shortlist and wash a shirt five times before you list it. Printful takes 20% off samples on its free plan and 25% on Growth.
The Verdict: Final Recommendations
Printful is our pick for most store owners. It owns its production, publishes its add-on prices, works with every major sales channel and costs nothing until you choose Growth. The premium over the cheapest Printify provider on a basic tee is about 60 cents before Premium discounts.
Printify is the right call when price per unit decides your business, as long as you sample providers and are willing to switch. Gelato wins for international art and print shops. Spreadconnect is the fastest free option for apparel in one region. Gooten suits home goods sellers with volume and patience. Teelaunch fills catalog gaps with niche products.
Many sellers combine two: Printful for core apparel and Gelato for wall art, or Printify for most items and Teelaunch for a few unusual gifts. All six connect to Shopify, so mixing is easy.
Conclusion
Before you compare plans, write down your real cost per order: base price, extra print placements, labels, shipping to your main market, and your sales channel's fees. A $2.49 outside label or a $5.95 back print can matter more than the plan you pick. Then compare that total at each service for your top three products, not for a generic t-shirt.
The best print-on-demand service is the one whose cost, speed and quality fit your products and your buyers' location. Start with a free plan, price your top three products everywhere you might sell them, and order samples before launch. Revisit the numbers each quarter: prices and plans changed several times this year, and they will change again.
