Why Shipping Software Matters in 2026
For most online stores, shipping is the biggest cost after the product itself. The tool you use to buy labels decides three things: what you pay per parcel, how many minutes each order takes, and how often a customer emails to ask where their package is.
Buying labels one at a time on a carrier website works for a handful of orders a week. Past that, you start copying addresses by hand, missing cheaper services and losing track of returns. Shipping software fixes this by pulling orders from your store, comparing carrier rates, printing labels in batches and sending tracking back to the customer.
The market splits into three groups:
- Free label tools that earn money from carriers or label commissions: Pirate Ship and Veeqo.
- Subscription label tools priced by volume, users and features: ShipStation, Shippo, Easyship and Sendcloud.
- Fulfillment services (3PLs) that do the packing for you: ShipBob.
This guide compares all seven using the plans, limits and fees each vendor publishes on its own site as of October 2026. Carrier discounts are quoted exactly as the vendors state them. They are "up to" figures for specific services, not average savings.
ShipStation review
What it is: ShipStation is a web-based shipping platform that imports orders from stores and marketplaces, compares carrier rates and prints labels in batches. Its site lists 400+ integrations, including 200+ global parcel carriers and 50+ LTL freight carriers, and says it serves 195 countries.
Pricing (billed monthly, USD): ShipStation prices by plan and by the number of shipments per month. The pricing page advertises 20% savings on annual billing. Every plan has a 30-day free trial with no credit card.
- Starter: 3 users and unlimited store connections. $14.99 for 50 shipments, $29.99 for 100, $39.99 for 500, $79.99 for 1,000, $119.99 for 2,000 and $174.99 for 5,000.
- Standard (most popular): 10 users. Adds unlimited automations, returns and exchanges, basic warehouse management, a shipping API, phone support and the option to bring your existing carrier accounts. From $29.99 for 50 shipments to $149.99 for 1,000, $449.99 for 10,000 and $3,599.99 for 100,000.
- Premium: 15 users. Adds advanced inventory and warehouse management (pick to tote), custom analytics, auto-routing and ODBC access. From $349.99 for 50 shipments to $1,099.99 for 10,000 and $7,499.99 for 100,000.
The pricing page lists no extra per-label software fee.
Carrier discounts (as ShipStation states them): "Save up to 90%* with automated rate shopping across 200+ parcel carriers." Its rate banner also lists "up to 85% off daily rates" and "up to 87% off retail prices" for specific carriers and services.
Key features:
- Unlimited store connections on all plans
- Rate shopping across many carriers, including USPS, UPS, FedEx, DHL Express, Canada Post, Royal Mail and Australia Post
- Automation rules, batch printing and branded tracking
- Returns and exchanges from Standard
- Inventory and warehouse tools on Premium
Pros:
- Covers almost any store, marketplace or carrier you are likely to use
- Automation saves real time once you ship dozens of orders a day
- Published prices for every volume tier, so you can budget
- Long free trial with no card
Cons:
- Starter stops at 5,000 shipments and 3 users
- Returns, phone support and your own carrier accounts require Standard, which costs more at every volume tier ($89.99 vs $39.99 at 500 shipments)
- Premium is a big jump: $349.99/month even at 50 shipments
Who should use it: Stores selling on two or more channels, shipping from about 100 orders a month upward, with a small team that needs rules and batch tools.
Who should avoid it: Very small US sellers who only need USPS or UPS labels. Pirate Ship or Shippo's free plan will cost less.
Shippo review
What it is: Shippo is a shipping app and API that lets you buy discounted labels, compare carriers and connect stores. Its site says it partners with 40+ carriers.
Pricing (USD):
- Starter: free. Up to 30 labels a month, 1 user, email support. Includes unlimited store connections, international shipping, automations, return labels, tracking and reporting. Using your own carrier account costs 5 cents per label.
- Pro: from $17/month billed monthly or $205/year billed annually. Label tiers run from 1-200 up to 5,001-10,000 labels a month. Up to 5 users, chat and phone support, and no fee for your own carrier account. Labels above 10,000 a month cost $0.08 each.
- Premier: contact sales. Unlimited shipments, 15+ users and a dedicated account manager.
US address validation is included. Non-US address validation costs 9 cents (Starter), 8 cents (Pro) or 6 cents (Premier). API calls not tied to Shippo labels, such as tracking or rating, are billed separately at API rates. Shippo's FAQ says there are no hidden fees on discounted labels.
Carrier discounts (as Shippo states them): "Discounted USPS, UPS, FedEx, and DHL Express labels" and "90% potential savings on shipping labels."
Store integrations named: Shopify, Square, WooCommerce, Wix, BigCommerce, Squarespace, Magento, Walmart and Amazon.
Pros:
- A free plan you can actually run a small store on
- Low starting price for Pro
- Unlimited store connections on every plan
- Four major carriers discounted out of the box
Cons:
- 30 labels and 1 user on the free plan is tight
- No inventory or warehouse features
- API usage outside label purchases adds cost
Who should use it: Small stores moving off carrier websites, and growing stores that want a simple tool without ShipStation's tier pricing.
Who should avoid it: Teams that need warehouse picking or inventory in the same tool.
Pirate Ship review
What it is: Pirate Ship is free shipping software for USPS and UPS labels in the US. It describes itself as "a licensed USPS Connect eCommerce Platform."
Pricing: free. The site says there are "No monthly fees, hidden costs, minimum volumes or commitments of any kind" and no credit card is needed to sign up. You pay the postage on each label.
How it makes money: in its own words, "we're paid by the carriers, not by you!" It adds that it "passes through the cheapest shipping rates with no additional costs."
Carrier discounts (as Pirate Ship states them): "Save up to 88% off USPS & UPS rates." Its rates page lists maximum savings by service, from 14% on USPS Priority Mail Express to 88% on USPS Priority Mail and Priority Mail Cubic. UPS discounts are "off Daily Rates" and "limited to shipments originating in the United States only."
Key features:
- USPS Priority Mail Cubic and Simple Export Rate for cheap international parcels
- Spreadsheet import and batch shipping
- Pay-on-use USPS return labels: you are charged only if the customer uses the label and USPS scans it

Pros:
- Costs nothing beyond postage
- Large published USPS and UPS discounts
- Simple interface with little to learn
- Covers the most common small-store platforms
Cons:
- Only USPS and UPS. No FedEx or DHL
- UPS discounts only for shipments starting in the US
- Lighter on automation, user roles and reporting than paid tools
Who should use it: US-based sellers, especially on eBay, Shopify or WooCommerce, who ship mostly with USPS.
Who should avoid it: Anyone shipping from outside the US, or who needs FedEx, DHL or regional carriers.
Veeqo review
What it is: Veeqo is shipping and inventory software owned by Amazon (acquired in 2021). Its pricing page stresses that it "isn't just for Amazon sellers" and connects to eBay, Shopify, Walmart, WooCommerce, TikTok Shop and others. It has US and UK sites.
Pricing (monthly, $):
- Shipping: free. Unlimited orders, users, products and warehouse locations. Includes bulk shipping of up to 100 orders in one click, claims-protected labels, rate shopping, reports and a Profit Analyzer.
- Inventory: from $19/month. Adds inventory sync, demand forecasting, digital picking and multichannel listings.
- High Volume: from $350/month. Adds a NetSuite integration, priority support and a dedicated account manager.
Paid plans are priced by monthly order volume. Orders fulfilled by Amazon FBA do not count. The page does not publish the full volume tiers.
How it makes money on the free plan: "We make a small commission on labels purchased through Veeqo." The rate is not disclosed.
Carrier discounts (as Veeqo states them): "the lowest commercially available rates," through pre-negotiated pricing with UPS, USPS, FedEx, DHL, Amazon Shipping and OnTrac. You also earn "up to 5% back in Veeqo Credits" on each label.
Pros:
- Free with no limits on orders or users
- More carriers than Pirate Ship, including FedEx and DHL
- Label credits lower your real postage cost
- Clear upgrade path into inventory management
Cons:
- Label commission is not disclosed as a number
- Paid plan pricing by volume is not public
- Most compelling if Amazon is a big channel for you
Who should use it: Multichannel sellers, especially those on Amazon, who want free label software for a whole team.
Who should avoid it: Sellers who want a fully transparent cost per label, or who sell from outside the US and UK, the two markets Veeqo's site covers.
Easyship review
What it is: Easyship is a shipping platform focused on cross-border orders. Its Shopify App Store listing says it compares "550+ services across the US, Canada, UK, EU, Australia & Asia."
Pricing: Easyship's own plans page loads prices dynamically, so we took figures from the vendor's Shopify App Store listing, which notes that plans may differ by market.
- Free: 50 shipments a month. Order sync, labels, tracking, pickup management, import tax and duty calculation, smart box selection, email support.
- Plus: $29/month or $276/year. 500 shipments. Adds your own courier account, live rates at checkout, batch label printing, branded tracking, automation rules and 24/7 live chat.
- Premier: $69/month or $660/year. 2,500 shipments. Adds live taxes and duties at checkout (DDP/DDU), multi-box shipments, returns management and phone support.
- Scale: from $99/month ($948/year), listed as $99 to $199/month for 5,000 to 10,000 shipments. Adds multi-location accounts and optional 3PL fulfillment.
Paid plans have a 14-day free trial. Easyship's plans page says annual billing saves 20%. Extra API calls, such as off-platform tracking or address validation, cost $0.003 to $0.005 each beyond the included amount.
Carrier discounts (as Easyship states them): "Save up to 91% with Exclusive Shipping Rates" and "up to 91% off retail with discounted rates on all the world's top couriers."
Pros:
- Duties, taxes and HS code tools built for international orders
- Very wide courier choice across regions
- Free plan with 50 shipments
- Integrates with ecommerce, marketplace and crowdfunding platforms
Cons:
- Main pricing page does not display prices
- Linking your own courier account and checkout rates start on Plus
- Extra API calls are billed per use
Who should use it: Stores where a large share of orders cross borders, and crowdfunded brands shipping to backers worldwide.
Who should avoid it: Domestic-only US sellers. Pirate Ship or Shippo will be cheaper and simpler.
Sendcloud review
What it is: Sendcloud is a European shipping platform with 170+ carriers and 100+ integrations. It fully supports sending from 8 countries: Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and the United Kingdom. Who should use it: Online stores based in the supported EU countries or the UK.
Who should avoid it: Stores shipping from North America or Australia.
ShipBob review
What it is: ShipBob is a third-party logistics (3PL) company. It is not label software. You send your stock to its warehouses and it picks, packs and ships each order. We include it because many stores reach a point where outsourcing is cheaper than hiring packers.
Pricing: custom quote. Its pricing page lists the fee types: implementation, receiving, storage, and pick, pack and ship per order. Shipping depends on weight, size, destination and service. Returns are a flat fee. In its words, "All quotes are customized for each customer." Its software is "completely free for all customers." No dollar amounts are published.
Key facts: fulfillment centers in the USA, Canada, the UK, Australia and Europe; ships to more than 250 destinations; carriers include UPS, USPS, FedEx and DHL; integrations named include Shopify, BigCommerce, Walmart, NetSuite and SPS Commerce.
Pros:
- Removes packing, storage and label work from your team
- International warehouse network
- Software included at no extra cost
Cons:
- No public prices
- You pay for storage and receiving even in slow months
- Less control over packaging and carrier choice
Who should use it: Brands with steady volume whose owners or staff spend too much time packing.
Who should avoid it: Stores with a handful of orders a day, or with custom packaging and kitting that a 3PL would charge extra for.
Head-to-Head Comparison
Ease of use: Pirate Ship and Shippo are the simplest. You can connect a store and print a label in minutes. Veeqo and Easyship add more settings but stay approachable. ShipStation and Sendcloud reward setup time with automation rules. ShipBob needs onboarding because stock has to move to its warehouses.
Features: ShipStation has the broadest feature set among label tools, from automation to warehouse picking on Premium. Veeqo matches part of that for free on shipping and adds inventory from $19/month. Easyship leads on international features. Sendcloud leads on European returns. Pirate Ship keeps to the basics.
Pricing value:
- At 30 labels a month: Pirate Ship, Veeqo and Shippo Starter all cost $0 in software.
- At 500 shipments a month: ShipStation Starter is $39.99, Easyship Plus is $29, and Shippo Pro starts at $17 (the price for each label tier is set in a selector on Shippo's page). Sendcloud Lite is €28 plus €0.10 per label and €0.15 extra for each label over 400 a month, about €93 in total. Pirate Ship and Veeqo stay free in software.
- At 5,000 shipments a month: ShipStation Starter is $174.99 (Standard $249.99), Easyship Scale is from $99, Sendcloud Premium is €175 plus €0.08 per label (about €575 in total).
Integrations: ShipStation claims 400+ integrations and Sendcloud 100+. Shippo and ShipStation offer unlimited store connections on every plan. Sendcloud limits integrations on Free, Lite and Growth. Pirate Ship covers the main small-store platforms but fewer marketplaces.
Carriers: ShipStation (200+ parcel carriers), Sendcloud (170+) and Easyship (550+ courier services) give the most choice. Shippo has 40+. Veeqo lists six main carriers. Pirate Ship has two.
Learning curve: low for Pirate Ship and Shippo, medium for Veeqo, Easyship and Sendcloud, higher for ShipStation Standard and Premium.
Fees to watch: Sendcloud's per-label fee and €0.15 overage. Shippo's 5 cents per label for your own carrier account on Starter and $0.08 per label above 10,000. Easyship's per-call API charges. Veeqo's undisclosed label commission. ShipBob's storage and receiving fees.
How to Choose: Decision Framework
- Where do you ship from? In the EU or UK, start with Sendcloud. In the US, every other tool here is an option. Pirate Ship's UPS discounts only work for US-origin parcels.
- Which carriers do you need? If USPS and UPS cover you, Pirate Ship is free. If you need FedEx or DHL too, look at Veeqo, Shippo or ShipStation.
- How many orders a month? Under 30, any free plan works. From about 100 to a few thousand, compare ShipStation Starter, Shippo Pro and Easyship Plus or Premier against your volume. Past several thousand, look at ShipStation Standard, Easyship Scale or a 3PL.
- How many people ship? Veeqo has unlimited users for free. ShipStation Starter allows 3 and Shippo Pro 5.
- Do you ship abroad a lot? Easyship's duty and tax tools save the most time.
- Are you tired of packing? Get a quote from ShipBob and compare it to your full in-house cost: labor, space, packaging and labels.
A simple test before you commit: take your 20 most recent orders and price them in two or three tools using their free plans or trials. Compare the total postage plus software fee, not the headline discount.
The Verdict: Final Recommendations
- Most growing multichannel stores: ShipStation. It connects to almost everything and automates repetitive work. Budget for Standard if you need returns or your own carrier accounts.
- US sellers watching every dollar: Pirate Ship. Free software and discounted USPS and UPS labels.
- Small stores that want a simple paid tool later: Shippo. Start free, move to Pro from $17/month.
- Amazon and multichannel sellers with a team: Veeqo. Free shipping for unlimited users, with inventory from $19/month.
- International shippers: Easyship, for duties, taxes and courier choice.
- European stores: Sendcloud.
- Brands ready to outsource: ShipBob.
Conclusion
There is no single best shipping tool. There is a best tool for where you ship from, which carriers you use and how many orders you handle. For a US store just starting out, Pirate Ship or Shippo's free plan costs nothing and covers the basics. As order volume and channels grow, ShipStation earns its price through automation. Veeqo is the strongest free choice for teams, especially Amazon sellers. Easyship and Sendcloud fill clear gaps for international and European sellers, and ShipBob is there when you would rather not pack boxes at all.
Treat carrier discounts as marketing ceilings. Price your own typical parcels in two tools before you pick one.
