Why Your IT Asset Management Choice Matters
IT asset management (ITAM) sounds like one job, but it is really three. You need to know what hardware you own and who has it. You need to know what software is installed and whether you are licensed for it. And, more and more, you need to know which SaaS apps people signed up for and what you are paying for seats nobody uses.
Most tools are strong at one of these and weaker at the rest. A tool built around barcodes and check-out is great for tracking laptops handed to new hires, but it may not scan your network at all. A discovery scanner can find every device on your network in an afternoon, but it may not handle who signed for which laptop. A SaaS management platform finds unused licenses across hundreds of apps, but it does not track a single physical device.
The other big split is how assets get into the system:
- Agentless discovery scans your network (WMI, SSH, SNMP and similar) from a server. Nothing to install on each device, but laptops that never touch the office network can be missed.
- Agent-based discovery installs a small app on each computer. It keeps reporting from home Wi-Fi, but you have to deploy and maintain it.
- Sync from systems you already have pulls devices from Microsoft Intune, Jamf, Google Workspace and other MDM tools. If every laptop is already enrolled in an MDM, this can be all the discovery you need.
- Manual entry and scanning with barcodes or QR labels covers monitors, docks, phones and anything else that has no agent.
This guide compares seven tools across those jobs:
- Hardware tracking with check-in/out and labels: Snipe-IT, Asset Panda
- ITAM inside a service desk: Freshservice
- Network discovery first: Lansweeper, ManageEngine AssetExplorer
- Free network inventory: Spiceworks Inventory
- SaaS spend and license tracking: Zluri
We did not test these tools hands-on. This is a researched comparison based on each vendor's own pricing pages, product pages and documentation, checked in October 2026.
Comparison Table
| Tool | Starting price | Best for | Discovery | Check-in/out | Depreciation |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Snipe-IT | Free self-hosted; hosted from $39.99/month | Hardware tracking and check-out | MDM/RMM sync adapters (no network scan) | Yes | Yes |
| Freshservice | Growth $49/agent/month billed annually (includes ITAM) | ITAM inside a service desk | Agent (Windows, Mac, Linux) and Windows probe | Loaners via service catalog | Yes |
| Lansweeper | Free up to 100 assets; Starter from $299/month billed annually | Network discovery | Agentless plus optional agent, connectors | Not a focus | Not a focus |
| Asset Panda | Quote-based; 7-day trial | Barcode-driven physical tracking | Integrations (Intune, Jamf, Google Workspace and more) | Yes | Yes (5 methods) |
| Zluri | Quote-based | SaaS spend and licenses | SSO, finance, browser extension, APIs, MDM and more | No (SaaS only) | No |
| ManageEngine AssetExplorer | Free edition; cloud from $115/month for 250 assets | Discovery plus license compliance | Agent and agentless, probe, domain scan | Loans | Yes (4 methods) |
| Spiceworks Inventory | Free (ad-supported) | Free network inventory | Scanning agent and network range scan | No | Not a focus |
Pricing checked October 2026 on each vendor's site. Prices are in USD and can change, so confirm on the vendor's pricing page before you buy. "Not a focus" means the vendor's own pages we reviewed do not describe the feature.
Snipe-IT Review
Snipe-IT is an open source asset management app. You can download and host it yourself for free, or pay Snipe-IT to host it. It is built around the day-to-day work of an IT team: who has which laptop, when it is due back, what licenses are expiring, and when the next audit is.
Pricing
- Self-hosted: free, with community support on GitHub and Discord.
- Basic Hosting: $39.99/month or $399.99/year. Adds email support, automated upgrades and server maintenance.
- Small Business Hosting: $99.99/month or $999.99/year. Adds more LDAP syncs per day and site IP restrictions.
- Dedicated Hosting: $249.99/month or $2,499.99/year, with a private server and VPN connectivity. Larger dedicated servers are $5,000 and $7,500 per year.
Every plan, including the free one, has unlimited users and unlimited assets. Snipe-IT says annual billing saves 16%. There is no free trial for hosting, but there is a public demo.
Standout features
- Check-in and check-out: one-click check-in, transfers between users, pre-built "kits" for faster checkouts, and an expected check-in report.
- User acceptance: you can require people to accept a EULA or terms when they receive an asset, with optional digital signatures.
- Barcodes and QR codes: works with handheld barcode scanners and QR reader apps, and generates QR labels.
- Depreciation: straight-line (linear) plus two half-year convention models.
- Licenses, accessories and consumables: track software licenses with expiry alerts, plus accessories, consumables and components with low inventory alerts.
- Integrations: 20 native sync adapters for MDM and RMM tools, including Microsoft Intune, Jamf Pro and Jamf School, Google Workspace, Kandji, JumpCloud, NinjaOne, Workspace ONE and Apple Business Manager. A custom HTTP adapter covers other systems with a JSON API.
- Admin basics: SAML SSO, Active Directory and LDAP user sync, a REST API, Slack and Teams notifications, and translations into more than 55 languages.
Who it is for
Small and mid-sized IT teams that mostly track laptops, phones and peripherals, hand them out and take them back, and want predictable costs. Schools and nonprofits on tight budgets get a lot from the free self-hosted version if someone can run a server.
Watch-outs
- Snipe-IT does not scan your network or install its own discovery agent. Devices come in through the sync adapters, CSV import, the API or manual entry. A Windows and macOS agent exists, but it is a third-party project.
- Self-hosting means you handle upgrades, backups and security. The free tier has community support only.
- Phone support and private Slack help require the Enterprise Support plan, which has no public price.
- The official mobile app is still in beta, so most mobile work happens in the mobile-friendly web app.
Freshservice Review
Freshservice, from Freshworks, is an IT service management platform: tickets, a service catalog, change management and more. IT asset management is built in on most plans, which makes it a natural choice if you also need a help desk and want assets linked to tickets.
Pricing
- Starter: $19/agent/month billed annually ($29 monthly). Does not include ITAM.
- Growth: $49/agent/month billed annually ($59 monthly). Includes the ITAM Growth package and 100 asset units.
- Pro: $99/agent/month billed annually ($119 monthly). Includes the ITAM Growth package and 100 asset units.
- Enterprise: custom pricing. Includes the ITAM Growth package and 100 asset units.
Asset licensing is separate from agent licensing. Freshservice counts "asset units": a desktop, laptop or mobile device is 1 unit, a server, VM or network device is 4 units, a SaaS user is 1 unit, and a non-IP physical asset or archived device is 1/25 of a unit. Extra units come in packs of 500. Freshworks does not show pack prices on its ITAM pricing page, so you need a quote. There is a 14-day free trial.
The ITAM add-on also has tiers. ITAM Growth covers discovery, hardware asset management, lifecycle, CMDB and workflow automation. ITAM Pro adds contracts and purchase orders, software asset management, SaaS discovery and software normalization. ITAM Enterprise adds service discovery and dependency mapping.
Standout features
- Discovery Agent for Windows, Mac and Linux that keeps updating even when a laptop is off the company network.
- Discovery Probe, a Windows app that scans by domain or IP range and can sync users from Active Directory.
- Intune integration that imports Intune computers and mobile devices as assets, with weekly sync by default and remote lock or wipe from the asset page. A Jamf Pro app syncs Apple devices and installed software one way into Freshservice.
- Depreciation with declining balance, straight line and sum-of-years-digits.
- Barcode and QR scanning in the iOS and Android apps to add assets or mark them audited.
- Loaners run through the service catalog: mark an asset as a loaner and Freshservice reserves one when someone requests it.
Who it is for
IT teams that want one system for tickets and assets, and who are happy to pay per agent. It works best when the people tracking assets are the same people answering tickets.
Watch-outs
- The 100 included asset units run out quickly. A company with 300 laptops needs extra units, and pack prices are quote-only.
- Software license management and SaaS discovery are in ITAM Pro, not the ITAM Growth package included with the base plans.
- Check-out is built around loaner requests rather than a simple "assign and track return" flow.
- The Discovery Probe runs on Windows only. Mac and Linux need the agent.
Lansweeper Review
Lansweeper is a discovery-first tool. Its main job is to find everything on your network, including devices you did not know about, and build a detailed inventory of hardware and software without asking people to install anything.
Pricing
All plans are billed annually.
- Free: 14-day full trial, then free for up to 100 assets with unlimited user seats and community support.
- Starter: from $299/month billed annually. Includes 2,000 assets, one installation, SSO, and service desk ticket enrichment integrations only.
- Pro: from $528/month billed annually. Includes 2,000 assets, expandable to 9,000, up to three installations, vulnerability and lifecycle insights, and all integrations.
- Enterprise: custom pricing, starting at 10,000 assets, with more installations, full API access and a customer success manager.
Software asset management is a paid add-on on Pro and Enterprise.
Standout features
- Agentless scanning of Windows, Linux, Unix and Mac machines. Lansweeper says everything it does can be done without an agent.
- LsAgent, an optional agent for Windows, Linux and Mac that can send data over the internet for remote laptops.
- IT, OT and cloud discovery in one inventory.
- Discovery connectors that import and reconcile data from SCCM, Intune, AirWatch and Google Workspace (G-Suite) MDM.
- Warranty collection for physical devices, plus lifecycle and vulnerability insights on Pro.
- Report builder and dashboards, with exports to Excel, CSV and PDF.
Who it is for
IT and security teams that need an accurate, automatic inventory of a large or messy network, especially one with servers, network gear and OT devices. It is also a strong data source to feed into a separate service desk.
Watch-outs
- Lansweeper's pricing and feature pages focus on discovery and inventory. We did not find check-in/out workflows or depreciation on them, so pair it with another tool if you need those.
- Starter only connects to service desk tools for ticket enrichment. Other integrations need Pro.
- The GraphQL API and webhooks are limited to proof-of-concept use on Starter and Pro. Full access needs Enterprise.
- The jump from the free 100-asset tier to Starter (from $299/month, billed annually) is big for a small business.
Asset Panda Review
Asset Panda is a configurable asset tracking platform with a strong mobile app. It covers IT equipment, but it is also used for non-IT assets, and its mobile scanning and check-out flows suit teams that move physical equipment around.
Pricing
Asset Panda does not publish prices. Its pricing page leads to a quote form, and it offers a free 7-day trial with a fully featured account.
Standout features
- Mobile barcode and QR scanning with phones and tablets you already own.
- Check-in and check-out with real-time updates.
- Depreciation with five methods: straight-line, units of production, sum of years, declining balance and double declining balance.
- Scheduled maintenance notifications to keep equipment under warranty.
- Custom fields per item type, such as purchase and insurance details.
- Integrations including Microsoft Intune, Jamf Pro, Jamf School, Google Workspace, Kandji, Apple Business Manager, Microsoft Entra ID, Okta, ServiceNow, Freshservice, Jira, Slack, Teams, QuickBooks, Xero, NetSuite, Workday, Dell Warranty and Zapier.
Who it is for
Organizations that track a lot of physical equipment, IT and non-IT, and want staff to scan and check items in and out from their phones. It fits teams where finance cares about depreciation as much as IT cares about specs.
Watch-outs
- No public pricing, so you cannot compare costs without talking to sales.
- The features page we reviewed does not describe network discovery. Devices come in through integrations, import or scanning.
- The trial is short at 7 days, so plan your evaluation before you start it.
Zluri Review
Zluri is a SaaS management and identity governance platform. It is not a hardware ITAM tool, and it does not track laptops, monitors or phones. We include it because a growing share of IT spend is SaaS seats, and the questions are the same ones ITAM asks: what do we have, who uses it, and what are we paying for that nobody uses?
Pricing
Zluri does not publish prices. Its pricing page offers a demo or a discovery session.
Standout features
- SaaS discovery using eight methods: identity providers and SSO, finance and expense systems, direct integrations, browser extensions, CASBs, MDMs, HR systems and directories.
- A catalog of more than 239,000 apps and more than 300 direct API integrations.
- Shadow IT detection, with alerts when restricted apps are used and policies for managed, unmanaged and unapproved apps.
- License optimization that can automatically reclaim or downgrade licenses based on usage thresholds.
- Renewals and contracts in one place, with renewal alerts and spend forecasting.
- Access reviews and identity security features in its wider platform.
Who it is for
Companies with dozens or hundreds of SaaS apps, where finance wants to cut waste and IT wants to know which apps hold company data. Use it alongside a hardware ITAM tool, not instead of one.
Watch-outs
- No hardware asset tracking, check-out, barcodes or depreciation.
- Quote-only pricing.
- Accuracy depends on connecting your SSO, finance and other systems, so expect setup work.
ManageEngine AssetExplorer Review
ManageEngine AssetExplorer is a dedicated ITAM tool from ManageEngine (part of Zoho). It combines network discovery with software license compliance, purchase orders, contracts, loans and barcodes. It comes as a cloud service or an on-premises install.
Pricing
Cloud pricing is published and based on the number of IT assets:
- 250 assets: $115/month or $1,245/year
- 500 assets: $225/month or $2,345/year
- 1,000 assets: $360/month or $3,895/year
- 2,000 assets: $580/month or $6,245/year
- 5,000 assets: $1,155/month or $12,445/year
- 10,000 assets: $1,545/month or $16,695/year
There is a 30-day trial for up to 250 assets and a free edition that never expires, limited to 50 nodes in the cloud or 25 nodes on-premises. On-premises licenses are billed yearly or as a perpetual license. A remote control add-on is $315 per concurrent session per year.
Standout features
- Agent-based and agentless discovery for Windows, plus probe scanning, domain scans and SSH or SNMP credentials for Macs, Linux, printers and network devices.
- Software license compliance, including suite licenses and upgrades or downgrades.
- Purchase orders and contracts, with cost centers and general ledger codes.
- Depreciation with four methods: declining balance, double declining balance, straight line and sum of the years digits.
- Loans with notifications when a loan is about to expire, and loan creation and return by scanning in the iOS app.
- Barcodes: generate and print custom barcodes, and scan barcodes and QR codes.
- Integrations including Microsoft Intune, Microsoft SCCM, Microsoft 365, Endpoint Central, Lansweeper and Zapier.
Who it is for
IT teams that want discovery, license compliance and financial tracking in one tool, with published per-asset pricing. The free edition is a real option for very small environments.
Watch-outs
- The product pages we reviewed do not list Jamf or Google Workspace integrations.
- ManageEngine's comparison page lists some features separately for cloud and on-premises, so check that the features you need are in the edition you plan to buy.
- The free edition's 25 to 50 node limit is only enough for a very small office.
Spiceworks Inventory Review
Spiceworks is best known for its IT community, and it still offers a free cloud tool called Inventory Online. Spiceworks retired its old desktop (on-premises) software in 2021, but the cloud inventory is still listed among its free tools, and its support forum has active posts from August to October 2026. So it has not been shut down. It is, however, a network inventory tool, not a full asset lifecycle system.
Pricing
Free, including support. Spiceworks pays for it with targeted advertising shown to IT pros.
Standout features
- Automatic device discovery using a scanning agent, with network range scans set from the Device Inventory page.
- Device details such as serial numbers of PCs and Macs, printers on the network, and the last user logged in to each workstation.
- Custom reports and exports.
- Help desk link: you can create tickets from inventory devices in Spiceworks' free cloud help desk.
Who it is for
Very small IT teams or solo admins who want a free first look at what is on their network, and who already use the Spiceworks community or help desk.
Watch-outs
- Spiceworks' own product page does not describe check-in/out, depreciation, barcodes or MDM integrations.
- It is ad-supported.
- Vendor documentation is thin compared with the paid tools here, so expect to rely on the community forum for answers.
How to Choose
-
Start with what you track. Mostly laptops and peripherals handed to people: Snipe-IT or Asset Panda. A full network with servers and switches: Lansweeper or AssetExplorer. Mostly SaaS seats: Zluri.
-
Decide how assets get in. If every laptop is in Intune, Jamf or Google Workspace, a tool that syncs from them (Snipe-IT, Asset Panda, Freshservice, Lansweeper connectors) may be enough. If you have devices nobody enrolled, you want real network discovery (Lansweeper, AssetExplorer, Freshservice's probe and agent, Spiceworks).
-
Agent or agentless? Agentless scanning (Lansweeper, AssetExplorer, the Freshservice Probe) finds things without touching each device but works best on the office network. Agents (LsAgent, Freshservice Discovery Agent, AssetExplorer's agent) keep remote laptops current.
-
Do you need a help desk too? If yes, Freshservice puts tickets and assets in one place. Snipe-IT, Asset Panda and Lansweeper all connect to other service desks instead.
-
Do you need check-out and depreciation? Snipe-IT, Asset Panda and AssetExplorer cover both. Freshservice covers depreciation and handles loaners through requests. Lansweeper, Spiceworks and Zluri are not built for this.
-
Check how the price scales. Snipe-IT hosted plans are flat. Lansweeper and AssetExplorer charge by asset count. Freshservice charges per agent plus asset units. Asset Panda and Zluri are quote-only.
Red flags
- Buying a SaaS management tool and expecting it to track hardware, or the other way round
- Counting on Freshservice's 100 included asset units for a company with hundreds of devices
- Relying only on agentless scans for a remote team whose laptops rarely join the office network
- Picking a free tool without checking who will maintain it (self-hosted Snipe-IT) or whether its limits fit (AssetExplorer's free edition)
What It Costs at 250 and 2,000 Assets
Most ITAM tools charge by asset count, not by user, so here is what the published prices mean for a small and a mid-sized estate. Freshservice charges per agent, so its numbers depend on team size.
| Tool | About 250 assets | About 2,000 assets |
|---|---|---|
| Snipe-IT | Free self-hosted, or $399.99/year Basic Hosting | Free self-hosted, or $399.99 to $999.99/year hosted (unlimited assets) |
| Lansweeper | Starter from $3,588/year ($299/month billed annually); free tier only covers 100 assets | Starter from $3,588/year (includes 2,000 assets) |
| ManageEngine AssetExplorer (cloud) | $1,245/year | $6,245/year |
| Freshservice | Growth at 10 agents: $5,880/year, includes 100 asset units; extra units quote-based | Growth at 50 agents: $29,400/year, includes 100 asset units; extra units quote-based |
| Spiceworks Inventory | Free | Free |
| Asset Panda | Quote-based | Quote-based |
| Zluri | Quote-based | Quote-based |
Freshservice figures use the Growth plan at $49/agent/month billed annually. The Pro plan is $99/agent/month billed annually. These are list prices from vendor sites in October 2026 and do not include taxes, add-ons or discounts.
Final Recommendations
1) Snipe-IT: best overall for hardware tracking
Snipe-IT does the core ITAM job well: check-in/out, QR labels, user acceptance, depreciation, license expiry alerts and audits. The 20 built-in sync adapters for tools like Intune, Jamf and Google Workspace cover discovery for MDM-managed fleets. Self-host it for free, or pay $399.99/year for hosting with unlimited users and assets.
2) Freshservice: best if you also need a help desk
If you want tickets, a service catalog and assets in one place, Freshservice is the natural choice. Budget for Growth or higher, since Starter has no ITAM, and get a quote for extra asset units early.
3) Lansweeper: best for network discovery
For finding everything on a network without installing agents, Lansweeper is the specialist. Use the free 100-asset tier to see what it finds, then expect Starter from $299/month billed annually.
4) Asset Panda: best for barcode-driven physical tracking
Asset Panda suits teams that scan and move a lot of equipment and want strong depreciation and integrations. Ask for a quote and use the 7-day trial on real items.
5) Zluri: best for SaaS spend and license tracking
Zluri answers the SaaS side of asset management: which apps you have, who uses them and which seats to reclaim. Pair it with a hardware ITAM tool.
6) ManageEngine AssetExplorer: best published per-asset pricing with discovery
AssetExplorer combines discovery, license compliance, loans, barcodes and depreciation, and you can see the price before you call anyone. Start with the free edition or the 30-day trial.
7) Spiceworks Inventory: best free network inventory
For a solo admin who wants a free list of what is on the network, Spiceworks Inventory still works. Move to a fuller tool when you need check-out, depreciation or integrations.
Conclusion
There is no single best ITAM tool, only the best fit for what you track and how devices reach your inventory. Snipe-IT is the strongest all-round pick for hardware tracking with clear pricing. Freshservice wins when assets and tickets belong together. Lansweeper and AssetExplorer lead on discovery. Asset Panda is strong for scanning and physical equipment. Zluri covers SaaS licenses, which hardware tools miss. Spiceworks is a free starting point.
A practical next step: count your devices, note which ones are already in an MDM, and list the three questions you most need your asset system to answer. Then trial the one or two tools that fit. Most offer a free tier, a free trial or a demo, so you can test with real data before you pay.
