Why Look for Rippling Alternatives in 2026

Rippling tries to be the one system behind every employee: US and global payroll, Employer of Record (EOR) hiring, HR records and time off, app accounts and single sign-on, laptops, and company spend, all on one employee record.

That reach is why people buy it, and also why many small and mid-size US businesses look elsewhere. The common reasons, based on what Rippling publishes:

  • You can't see the full price up front. Plans "start at $8 per employee per month, with a monthly base fee," but the base fee and per-product prices are not published. You get a custom quote from sales.
  • Each module costs extra. Payroll, IT, global and finance products are priced separately, so the bill grows as you add modules.
  • It can be more than a small team needs. For 15 people in one state with no laptops to manage, it means more setup and admin than a payroll-only tool.
  • No free trial is mentioned. Only eligible US VC-backed startups get free access (six months).
  • You want a different model, such as a PEO with group health plans, a dedicated HRIS, or published prices for hiring abroad.

This guide compares Rippling with six options that cover those needs: Gusto and OnPay for simple, published-price payroll; Justworks as a PEO; BambooHR as an HRIS; Paychex Flex for a long-established full-service provider; and Deel for global hiring. Prices and features come from each vendor's own pages, checked in October 2026.

Rippling review

Rippling is a modular platform built on a single employee record. Payroll, HR, IT and finance products all read from it, so a new hire or a departure can flow into pay, app access and devices.

Key features

  • Payroll: US payroll, global payroll on your own entities, EOR without an entity, and contractor payments in 185+ countries (Rippling's figure).
  • HRIS and time off: custom PTO policies, approvals and real-time balances, with requests in the same mobile app used to clock in.
  • Identity and access management: single sign-on and rule-based app provisioning and deprovisioning, with 600+ integrations.
  • Device management: Mac and Windows zero-touch enrollment, remote lock and wipe, and laptop shipping to new hires.
  • Finance: expense management, corporate cards, bill pay and travel.

Pricing

  • Plans "start at $8 per employee per month, with a monthly base fee." The base fee amount is not published.
  • Each product is priced separately and no per-product prices are published. The total needs a custom quote.
  • Startup program: eligible US VC-backed startups get free access for six months.
  • No free plan or free trial is mentioned.

Pros

  • One system for HR, payroll, IT devices and apps, and spend.
  • New-hire automation covers offer letters, app accounts and device shipping.
  • Free off-cycle pay runs.

Cons

  • Quote-based, modular pricing is hard to compare with rivals.
  • Paying per module adds up for teams that want the full suite.
  • No published EOR or global payroll country count (the 185+ figure is for contractors).
  • More setup and admin than a payroll-only tool for very small teams.

Who should use it

Growing companies that issue laptops and many app accounts and want onboarding to handle pay, access and devices in one step, including staff abroad.

Who should skip it

Small teams that only need payroll and basic time off, and anyone who wants to know the full monthly cost before talking to sales.

Gusto review

Gusto is full-service payroll with benefits and basic HR for small US businesses. Unlike Rippling, every plan is published and billed monthly, with "No contracts. Free account setup." There is no free plan or trial.

Key features

  • Full-service payroll with unlimited payrolls and tax filings on all plans.
  • Time off tracking on all plans. Time tracking, scheduling and custom time off policies on Plus and Premium (add-ons on Simple).
  • Self-onboarding with digital I-9s and W-4s on all plans.
  • Job postings, applicant tracking, custom onboarding checklists and software provisioning on Plus and Premium.
  • Global contractor payments in 120+ countries as an add-on, with no monthly per-contractor fee. International full-time employees go through Gusto's EOR partner, Remote.

Pricing

All prices are monthly with no contract.

  • Simple: $49/month + $6/month per person. Basic payroll in one state, basic PTO policies and holiday pay.
  • Plus: $80/month + $12/month per person. Adds multi-state payroll, time tracking and scheduling, next-day pay, hiring and ATS, onboarding checklists and performance tools.
  • Premium: $180/month + $22/month per person. Adds Premium Account Support, HR guidance, Gusto Business Compliance, and same-day and instant pay.
  • Selected add-ons: same-day pay $90 and instant pay $100 per payroll (Simple and Plus); Gusto Business Compliance $85/month per state on an annual contract; Priority Support $30/month + $3/person.

Pros

  • Public pricing with no long-term contract and free setup.
  • Health insurance administration with no Gusto admin fee.
  • Global contractor payments with no monthly per-contractor fee.

Cons

  • Simple covers payroll in one state only. Multi-state needs Plus.
  • Faster pay, compliance help and priority support cost extra below Premium.
  • No in-house EOR. International employees go through partner Remote.

Who should use it

Small US businesses that want payroll, benefits and basic HR at a visible price.

Who should skip it

Teams that need an in-house EOR rather than a partner, or that want same-day pay and HR guidance without paying for Premium.

Deel review

Deel covers EOR, contractors, global and US payroll, HR and IT. Like Rippling, it is a broad platform. Unlike Rippling, it publishes per-person prices, and its FAQ says plans are month-to-month.

Key features

  • EOR: hire employees without a local entity. The pricing page says 130+ countries on one card and 150+ on another.
  • Contractors: local contracts, automated invoicing and tax forms. Deel says it pays contractors across 200+ countries and jurisdictions.
  • Payroll: global payroll in 130+ countries and US payroll in all 50 states.
  • Deel HR: profiles, org chart, time off and approvals, and time and attendance on Core. Performance and engagement surveys on Advanced.
  • Deel IT: device lifecycle, MDM and endpoint protection.

Pricing

All prices are per month.

  • EOR: $599 per employee.
  • Contractors: $49 per contractor. Contractor of Record: $325 per contractor.
  • Payroll: Deel Payroll US $29 per employee (self-service, managed option available). Deel Payroll Global $29 per employee.
  • Deel HR: Core $5, Advanced $19, Elite $29 per employee. ATS add-on from $10 per employee.
  • Deel IT: Starter $49, Growth $139, Scale $149 per user.
  • Bundles: Deel HR + Deel Payroll US at $22 (Core), $39 (Advanced) or $49 (Elite) per employee.
  • US PEO: offered, but the pricing page shows conflicting figures, so confirm the price with Deel.
  • No free plan. The FAQ offers a free demo.

Pros

  • Public per-employee prices for EOR, contractors, payroll, HR and IT.
  • Month-to-month pricing with no long-term contract (outside the PEO promotion).
  • Many payout options for contractors.

Cons

  • EOR at $599 per employee per month is a large cost per hire.
  • Many products, add-ons and bundles to sort through.
  • Performance reviews and engagement surveys need Deel HR Advanced ($19).
  • The PEO promotion (three months of fees credited, forms signed July 15 to December 31, 2026) needs a two-year term.

Who should use it

Companies hiring in several countries that want EOR, payroll, HR and IT from one vendor.

Who should skip it

US-only teams. At 20 employees, Deel Payroll US costs more than Gusto or OnPay (see the cost example below).

Justworks review

Justworks is a PEO (professional employer organization) that also sells standalone payroll, and it publishes the price of every plan. A PEO gives small companies access to group health plans and shares the HR compliance load.

Key features

  • PEO with access to group medical, dental and vision insurance on PEO Plus.
  • Standalone payroll with multi-state payroll and contractor payments.
  • Online onboarding, PTO management and a mobile app on all plans.
  • 24/7 support, HR consulting, EPLI and compliance help on PEO plans.
  • EOR at $599 per employee (with PEO Basic or Plus) and international contractor payments in 60+ countries.

Pricing

All prices are per month. There is no implementation fee.

  • Payroll: $8 per employee + $50 base fee.
  • PEO Basic: $79 per employee, no base fee. Adds compliance, HR consulting, 24/7 support and 401(k).
  • PEO Plus: $124 per employee, no base fee. Adds medical, dental and vision administration and HSA/FSA.
  • EOR: $599 per employee, an add-on to PEO Basic or Plus.
  • Add-ons: Time Tracking $8 per employee; US contractors $8 per paid contractor, charged only in months you pay them; international contractors $39 each plus exchange rate fees.
  • The PEO needs at least two W-2 employees (full-time or part-time). Any size company can use Payroll.
  • No free plan or free trial stated.

Pros

  • Published per-employee pricing for payroll, PEO and EOR.
  • US contractors billed only in months they are paid.
  • 24/7 support on PEO plans.

Cons

  • PEO cost per head is high next to payroll-only tools.
  • The Payroll plan lacks 24/7 support, HR consulting and EOR.
  • International contractor coverage (60+ countries) is narrower than Deel's or Rippling's stated figures.

Who should use it

Small US companies that want group health benefits and shared HR compliance at a published price.

Who should skip it

Teams whose main reason for Rippling is its IT or spend tools, and very cost-sensitive teams that don't need PEO benefits.

BambooHR review

BambooHR is an HRIS: the system of record for employee data, time off, onboarding and surveys, with payroll and benefits as add-ons. If you want Rippling's HR side rather than its IT or spend tools, it is the most HR-focused option here.

Key features

  • Time off: unlimited custom policies on Core: accrual-based, manual or flexible (unlimited), with tenure-based increases, carryover caps and carryover expiration dates.
  • Onboarding: pre-onboarding packets, checklists with automated reminders, e-signatures, and I-9 and E-Verify workflows (powered by Mitratech).
  • Hiring: candidate records, job posting and offer letter templates on Core.
  • Surveys and performance: eNPS and wellbeing surveys on Core; 360 reviews, goals and 1:1s on Pro; compensation planning on Elite.
  • US payroll add-on with federal, state and local tax filing.

Pricing

  • Companies with 25 or fewer employees pay a flat monthly rate: $250 (Core), $425 (Pro) or $650 (Elite).
  • Above 25 employees pricing is per employee, from about $10 per employee per month on Core, with automatic volume discounts.
  • Add-ons by quote: Payroll, Benefits Administration, Time & Attendance, and Global Employment (powered by Remote).
  • 15% off for bundling Payroll and Benefits Administration, and 15% off for registered nonprofits.
  • Promotion: Payroll subscription fees at $0 through December 31, 2026 for eligible customers with a 12-month commitment.
  • No free plan. A free trial exists, but the pricing page doesn't confirm its length.

Pros

  • Time off, hiring, onboarding and eNPS surveys all included in Core.
  • Published plan prices and flat rates for small teams.

Cons

  • Small teams pay a flat $250+ per month no matter how few people they have.
  • Payroll and benefits are US-only and priced by quote.
  • Performance reviews need Pro; compensation tools need Elite.
  • Time & Attendance (scheduling, kiosk) is a separate add-on.

Who should use it

US small and mid-size businesses whose main need is an HR system for records, time off, onboarding and surveys.

Who should skip it

Small teams that mainly need payroll: the flat $250 Core rate alone is more than OnPay costs for 20 people.

Paychex Flex review

Paychex Flex is the small-business payroll and HR offering from Paychex, a long-established provider. Like Rippling it is quote-based, but it leans on service, with a path to HR outsourcing or a PEO.

Key features

  • Unlimited payroll processing with tax filing and W-2/1099 year-end processing on all packages.
  • Employee self-service, mobile app and document management on all packages.
  • AI payroll and HR reports on Foundations and up.
  • Employee onboarding included from Foundations; applicant tracking included from Advanced.
  • HR Pro and HR PEO options with dedicated HR professional guidance.

Pricing

  • No public prices. Each package says "Request Pricing."
  • Packages: Basic, Foundations, Advanced and Complete. HR Pro and HR PEO are also quote-based.
  • Time & Attendance and Advanced Scheduling are add-ons on every package.
  • Promotion: "Do Not Pay Until April 2027" runs October 12 to 31, 2026 unless extended. New clients with 1 to 250 employees who sign a one-year agreement for Foundations, Advanced or Complete get payroll free through April 2027, up to six months. Basic doesn't qualify, other fees still apply, and the benefit can be clawed back if you leave within a year.

Pros

  • Wide range, from basic payroll to a full PEO.
  • Onboarding and AI reports included from Foundations.
  • Assisted or managed setup available.

Cons

  • No public pricing, so it is as hard to compare as Rippling.
  • Time tracking and scheduling cost extra on every package.
  • More sales process than self-serve tools.

Who should use it

US businesses that want more hands-on service and may move to outsourced HR or a PEO later.

Who should skip it

Teams that want to compare published prices before talking to sales, or that want to self-serve.

OnPay review

OnPay is the low-cost option. One payroll plan covers W-2 and 1099 workers in all 50 states, with HR and time tracking as priced add-ons.

Key features

  • Multi-state payroll in all 50 states at no extra cost, with automatic state tax registrations.
  • Onboarding with offer letters and eSignature for I-9 and W-4.
  • Custom PTO accrual policies, benefits administration and an employee mobile app in the base plan.
  • White-glove setup with free data migration. Phone, email and chat support for all clients.

Pricing

All prices are monthly. There are no implementation or integration fees.

  • Payroll Essentials: $49 base + $6 per worker.
  • Add-ons: HR $15 base + $2 per worker; Time Tracking $15 base + $4 per worker; Compliance Resources $10 base; Live HR Support $65 base.
  • Bundles: Payroll + Time Tracking + HR at $70 base + $10 per worker; Payroll + HR + Compliance + Live HR Support at $120 + $7; all of it at $130 + $10.
  • OnPay advertises "Get your first month free", but the pricing page doesn't show the terms.

Pros

  • Low published price with multi-state payroll included.
  • Phone, chat and email support on every plan.
  • Free setup and data migration.

Cons

  • PTO approvals, onboarding workflows and org charts need the HR add-on.
  • No global payroll, EOR or international contractor payments.
  • Support runs 9am to 8pm on weekdays.

Who should use it

Small US businesses, including multi-state teams, that want low-cost payroll and will add HR only if needed.

Who should skip it

Anyone hiring employees or contractors abroad, and teams that want 24/7 or weekend support.

Head-to-Head Comparison

Scope: all-in-one vs focused tools

Of the tools here, Rippling has the widest published scope. It combines payroll and HR with identity and access management (SSO and app provisioning), Mac and Windows device management, and finance tools (expenses, corporate cards, bill pay, travel). Deel comes closest: it has HR, payroll, EOR, an Expenses add-on and a separate Deel IT product for devices and MDM. The others focus on payroll and HR (BambooHR on HR, with payroll as an add-on).

Pricing transparency and contracts

  • Fully published: Gusto, OnPay, Justworks and Deel (except Deel's US PEO). Gusto and Deel say month-to-month with no long-term contract. OnPay includes multi-state payroll; Gusto needs Plus for it.
  • Partly published: BambooHR publishes HRIS prices but quotes payroll, benefits and time tracking.
  • Quote only: Rippling (only a "from $8 per employee" floor plus an unpublished base fee) and Paychex Flex.

Benefits and PEO

Justworks is the dedicated PEO choice, with group medical, dental and vision on PEO Plus ($124 per employee). Paychex offers an HR PEO by quote. Gusto administers health insurance with no Gusto admin fee. BambooHR sells Benefits Administration as a quoted add-on for US employees.

Time off and onboarding

Of the tools here, BambooHR publishes the most detailed time-off rules, including tenure-based accruals and carryover expiration. Rippling, Gusto and Justworks include PTO management (Gusto's custom policies need Plus or Premium). OnPay's base plan has accrual policies, but requests and approvals need the HR or Time Tracking add-on, and Paychex puts time off inside its Time & Attendance add-on. For onboarding, Rippling stands out by tying a new hire to app accounts and laptop shipping.

Global hiring

Deel publishes the most global prices: EOR $599 per employee, contractors $49 each, payroll in 130+ countries. Rippling has EOR and global payroll too, with contractor payments in 185+ countries, but no published EOR price or country count. Justworks offers EOR at $599 (with a PEO plan) and international contractors in 60+ countries at $39 each. Gusto pays contractors in 120+ countries and uses partner Remote for EOR, as does BambooHR's quoted Global Employment add-on. OnPay is US only.

Worked cost example: a 20-employee US company

Take a 20-person company with all employees on W-2. The figures below are monthly list prices from each vendor's pricing page, before taxes, benefits premiums and optional add-ons.

OptionMathPer monthPer year
OnPay Payroll Essentials$49 + (20 x $6)$169$2,028
Gusto Simple (one state only)$49 + (20 x $6)$169$2,028
Justworks Payroll$50 + (20 x $8)$210$2,520
OnPay + HR add-on$169 + $15 + (20 x $2)$224$2,688
BambooHR Core (HRIS only, no payroll)Flat rate for 25 or fewer$250$3,000
OnPay Payroll + Time Tracking + HR bundle$70 + (20 x $10)$270$3,240
Gusto Plus (multi-state)$80 + (20 x $12)$320$3,840
Deel HR Core + Payroll US bundle20 x $22$440$5,280
Deel Payroll US20 x $29$580$6,960
Justworks PEO Basic20 x $79$1,580$18,960
Justworks PEO Plus20 x $124$2,480$29,760

A few things stand out:

  • OnPay and Gusto Simple are cheapest at $169 a month. For staff in more than one state, Gusto needs Plus at $320; OnPay stays at $169.
  • BambooHR's $250 is for the HRIS alone. Payroll is a quoted add-on, so the real total for HR plus payroll will be higher (BambooHR's $0 payroll subscription promotion through December 31, 2026 may help eligible customers with a 12-month commitment).
  • The PEO tiers cost more because they include more, such as group medical, dental and vision administration on PEO Plus. Compare them with what you pay today for benefits, not with payroll alone.
  • Rippling and Paychex Flex are left out of the math. Neither publishes a full price. Rippling's $8 per employee floor would be $160 for 20 people, but that excludes the unpublished base fee and covers only the starting product, so it isn't a real total. Paychex publishes no prices at all. Get written quotes from both and add them to this table.

How to Choose: Decision Framework

Questions to answer first

  1. Do you manage laptops and app accounts centrally? If yes, Rippling (or Deel IT) is worth a quote. If no, a payroll or HR tool may be enough.
  2. Do you employ people outside the US? For employees, look at Deel, Rippling or Justworks EOR. For a few contractors, Gusto's add-on may do.
  3. Do you want better group health benefits? A PEO like Justworks (or Paychex HR PEO) is the main route for small companies.
  4. Are you in more than one state? Check that the plan you're pricing includes multi-state payroll. Gusto Simple doesn't.
  5. Is HR the main need, or payroll? For HR, start with BambooHR. For payroll, start with OnPay, Gusto or Justworks Payroll.
  6. Can you wait for a quote? If not, prefer tools with published prices.

Red flags

  • A quote with a per-employee price but no monthly base fee (ask Rippling for both).
  • Promotions tied to longer terms: Paychex's free months require a one-year agreement and can be clawed back; Deel's PEO credit requires a two-year term; BambooHR's free payroll requires a 12-month commitment.
  • Needed features on a higher tier or add-on: same-day pay on Gusto, PTO approvals on OnPay, reviews on BambooHR Pro.
  • Assuming a PEO is right for a one-person company: Justworks PEO needs at least two W-2 employees.

What to test in a demo or trial

  • Run a sample payroll with your real pay types, states and deductions.
  • Set up your real PTO policy and check the balances.
  • Walk a test new hire through onboarding, including I-9 and W-4.
  • For Rippling and Deel IT, test app provisioning and device enrollment on your own apps and laptops.
  • Ask how you export employee records and pay history if you leave.

The Verdict: Final Recommendations

1. Rippling: best for HR, payroll, IT and spend in one system

Choose it if hiring and leaving should update pay, app access and laptops in one step. Get the base fee in writing.

2. Gusto: best for small US teams wanting payroll plus benefits

Published month-to-month pricing and free setup. Budget for Plus if you're in more than one state.

3. Deel: best for global teams

Public prices for EOR ($599), contractors ($49) and payroll ($29). The pick if hiring abroad is central.

4. Justworks: best PEO with published pricing

PEO Basic at $79 and PEO Plus at $124 per employee. Choose it when benefits matter more than the lowest price.

5. BambooHR: best HRIS

Detailed time-off rules and onboarding on Core, at a flat $250 a month for 25 or fewer employees.

6. Paychex Flex: best for hands-on service

A path from basic payroll to HR Pro or a PEO with one provider, priced by quote.

7. OnPay: best value

$49 plus $6 per worker with multi-state payroll included. Add HR for $15 plus $2 per worker for PTO approvals.

Conclusion

Rippling makes the most sense when you will use its IT and spend modules, not just payroll and HR. For most US small businesses, OnPay (or Gusto Simple, if you're in one state) covers payroll and basic HR for $169 a month at 20 employees. Justworks adds a PEO, BambooHR adds a stronger HR system, and Deel covers hiring in other countries. Price two or three with your real headcount and states before you sign.

Frequently asked questions

OnPay and Gusto Simple both start at $49 a month plus $6 per worker, which is $169 a month for 20 employees. OnPay includes multi-state payroll at that price, while Gusto Simple covers one state only.
