Why Your Performance Management Software Choice Matters

Performance management software serves three groups at once: employees who touch it at review time, managers who use it weekly for 1:1s and goals, and HR, who owns it all year. Pick a tool that fits only one of them and you get late review cycles, stale goals and calibration meetings run on spreadsheets.

The category has also changed shape. In 2026 most vendors sell a platform of modules rather than one product: reviews, goals and OKRs, engagement surveys, compensation, career growth, and increasingly an HRIS underneath. Each module carries its own per-person price, so the number on the pricing page rarely matches the number on the invoice. And every vendor now pitches AI, mostly for drafting reviews from existing notes, summarizing feedback and survey comments, and coaching managers before hard conversations.

This guide compares seven tools on review cycles and calibration, 1:1s and check-ins, goals and OKRs, feedback, engagement surveys, compensation, AI features as each vendor describes them, and pricing: per-person rates, minimums, billing terms and which modules you actually need.

All prices below come from each vendor's own pricing page as checked in October 2026. Where a vendor does not publish prices, we say so rather than guess.

Lattice review

What it is

Lattice is a people platform built around performance management. You buy base products (Performance, Goals & OKRs, Engagement) and optional add-ons (Compensation, Grow). Every base product includes what Lattice calls Manager Tools: 1:1s, Weekly Updates, Feedback and Q&A Boards. Analytics, the Lattice AI Agent and integrations come with all base products.

Key features

  • Reviews and cycles: Performance Reviews, Talent Reviews, Promotions, Performance Improvement Plans (PIPs) and Succession Planning are all part of the Performance product.
  • Calibration: listed as a key feature of the Performance product, so it is not a separate purchase.
  • 1:1s, Weekly Updates and Feedback: included with any base product, which matters because these feed the review.
  • Goals & OKRs: cascading goals, progress updates, reminder notifications, and integrations with Salesforce and Jira.
  • Engagement: pulse surveys, onboarding and exit surveys, action planning, eNPS, and AI analysis and trends.
  • Compensation add-on: global benchmarks, comp bands, cycle management, analytics, statements and multi-chain approvals.
  • Grow add-on: competencies, individual development plans (IDPs), career tracks, 1:1 integration and AI-powered growth areas.

AI features (as Lattice describes them)

Lattice's AI Agent is pitched as more than a chatbot: it "acts on your data, answers your team's questions, and coaches managers in the flow of work." On its AI page, Lattice lists coaching for employees and managers, review drafting that synthesizes "1:1s, feedback, goals, and updates into a complete evidence-backed draft," note-taking for meetings and action items, analysis of patterns and risks across people data, and help composing reviews and feedback. The pricing page says the AI Agent comes with all base products.

Pricing

  • Foundations package: $13 per seat per month. Lattice's most popular package bundles Performance and Goals & OKRs with Manager Tools, Analytics, the AI Agent and integrations.
  • Performance: $10 per seat per month.
  • Goals & OKRs: $8 per seat per month.
  • Engagement: $4 per seat per month.
  • Compensation add-on: +$6 per seat per month.
  • Grow add-on: +$4 per seat per month.
  • Enterprise: custom quote based on seats, complexity and scale.

Terms: all contracts are billed annually, in US dollars only, and the minimum annual agreement is $4,000. Lattice says there are no additional costs for implementation or change management for its performance management software. Performance and Goals & OKRs can be bought separately.

Pros

  • The broadest set of published, per-seat modules in this comparison, so you can estimate cost before a sales call.
  • Calibration, PIPs, promotions and succession planning are included in Performance rather than sold as extras.
  • 1:1s, updates and feedback come with every base product, which keeps review evidence in one place.
  • Compensation and career growth are available as add-ons, so pay and promotion decisions can sit next to review data.

Cons

  • The $4,000 minimum annual agreement means very small teams pay more than the per-seat math suggests.
  • Annual billing only, in USD only.
  • Costs climb quickly if you add Engagement, Compensation and Grow on top of Foundations.

Who it's for

Companies from roughly 30 to several thousand employees that want one performance system covering reviews, goals, 1:1s and calibration, with the option to add engagement and compensation later.

15Five review

What it is

15Five started with the weekly check-in and has grown into a performance, engagement and manager-development platform. It is sold as three packages (Engage, Perform, Total Platform) plus add-ons for compensation, AI note-taking and coaching, and human-led manager coaching.

Key features

  • Reviews and cycles: AI-assisted performance reviews, 360° reviews (manager, peer, upward) and lifecycle reviews by employment stage.
  • Calibration: the feature grid lists "Calibrations (Fairness & Consistency)" and a 9-box Talent Matrix.
  • 1:1s and check-ins: 1-on-1 agendas, action items and notes, plus Weekly Check-ins covering pulse, wins and challenges.
  • Goals: weighted OKRs and goal management.
  • Feedback and recognition: request feedback at any time and High Fives for recognition.
  • Engagement: engagement surveys and eNPS, targeted assessments, heat maps, industry benchmarking, lifecycle (onboarding and exit) surveys, and action planning.
  • Compensation add-on: compensation reviews, pay ranges, total rewards dashboards, HRIS integration, and optional Mercer salary benchmarking.

AI features (as 15Five describes them)

15Five lists AMAYA (described as an "AI Thought Partner"), an Insights Dashboard, AI-assisted performance reviews and 15Five Agents, which it describes as "automatic workflows that make performance management faster." The Engage side includes an AI Predictive Impact Score and AI-synthesized summaries of open-text feedback. Two AI products are sold separately under the Kona name: Kona Notetaker writes 1-on-1 meeting notes and auto-populates a "Performance Snapshot" for reviews, and Kona Coach offers AI coaching tailored to each manager.

Pricing

All prices are billed annually.

  • Engage: $4 per user per month.
  • Perform: $11 per user per month (labeled most popular).
  • Total Platform: $16 per user per month. Includes everything in Engage and Perform plus manager training microlearnings.
  • Manager Products, Content: $49 per manager per month.
  • Manager Products, Coaching: $399 per credit (a 1-on-1 coaching session is 1 credit, a group session is 5 credits).
  • Kona Notetaker: $2 per employee per month.
  • Kona Coach: $19 per manager per month.
  • Compensation Base Package: $9 per user per month.
  • Compensation + Salary Benchmarking: $11 per user per month.

15Five says its standard packages have no minimum spend, though "some optional add-ons may include minimum requirements." Contracts are billed annually. No free trial is advertised; the route in is a demo.

Pros

  • The best weekly check-in and 1:1 workflow in this group, which builds the manager habits that make reviews easier.
  • Total Platform at $16 bundles performance, engagement and manager microlearnings in one per-user price.
  • No minimum spend on standard packages.
  • Unusual depth in manager development: microlearning, an AI coach, and paid human coaching.

Cons

  • The AI notetaker and AI coach are extra, so the AI story costs more than the base price suggests.
  • Compensation is a separate add-on at $9 to $11 per user per month, nearly doubling the Perform price.
  • Annual billing only.

Who it's for

Small and mid-sized companies whose main problem is inconsistent management: managers who skip 1:1s, unclear priorities, and reviews written from memory.

Culture Amp review

What it is

Culture Amp is best known for employee engagement surveys backed by its people-science team and large benchmark dataset. It sells two main products, Engage and Perform, plus People Science Consulting as an add-on.

Key features

  • Engagement (Engage): ready-to-use surveys, pulse surveys, onboarding and offboarding surveys, a DEI survey, Retention Insights, a Performance Culture Quadrant diagnostic, AI comment summaries, action plans and benchmarking.
  • Reviews and calibration (Perform): performance reviews with calibration, which Culture Amp says helps "mitigate bias in your performance management process."
  • 1:1s: 1-on-1 conversations, with 1-on-1 templates included in every plan.
  • Goals: goal management aligned to company objectives.
  • Feedback: continuous and 360° feedback, plus Shoutouts for praise.
  • Compensation: not offered. Culture Amp's pricing and Perform pages list no compensation product.

AI features (as Culture Amp describes them)

AI Coach is built into Engage and Perform and is included in every plan. Culture Amp says it summarizes performance data from reviews, peer feedback and self-reflections, helps managers "draft and refine objective, actionable, and balanced performance reviews," and prepares managers for difficult conversations with role-play and suggested talk tracks.

Pricing

Culture Amp does not publish prices; you need to request a quote. Its pricing page says cost "depends on the number of employees, product chosen, and service tier," and that all products are billed annually. Service tiers are split by company size:

  • Small and medium (under 200 employees): group customer success support, on-demand training, 24/5 chat and email support.
  • 200 to 999 employees: adds a one-on-one customer success partnership and project-managed implementation.
  • Enterprise (1,000+ employees): adds manager and executive training, a results call with a People Scientist, coaching and a pre-launch review.

Pros

  • The strongest engagement survey offering here, with a large question library, benchmarks and people-science backing.
  • AI Coach is included in every plan rather than sold as an add-on.
  • Calibration is part of Perform, and 24/5 chat and email support comes with every tier.

Cons

  • No public pricing, so budgeting requires a sales conversation.
  • No compensation module, so merit cycles need another tool.
  • If you only need reviews, you are paying for survey science you may not use.

Who it's for

Companies where engagement and culture measurement is the priority and performance reviews are the second step, especially those that value benchmarks against similar organizations.

Leapsome review

What it is

Leapsome is a people platform that pairs an HRIS ("Agentic HRIS") with a Talent Suite of modules: Performance Reviews, Goals & OKRs, Engagement Surveys, Learning, Compensation, Recruiting and Time Tracking. You pick an HRIS foundation and add the modules you need.

Key features

  • Reviews and cycles: 360° reviews, self-assessments, peer reviews, project-based reviews and manager evaluations, with review automations, flexible templates and external reviewers.
  • Calibration: drag-and-drop calibration and cross-cycle analytics. Leapsome says AI-generated calibration pre-reads "flag inconsistencies like manager leniency," while "every adjustment stays under human review."
  • 1:1s and meetings: meetings and instant feedback are part of the HRIS foundation, so they are not a separate purchase.
  • Goals & OKRs: individual, team and company OKRs, automatic progress tracking, a goal tree, update reminders and a Jira integration.
  • Engagement: a science-backed question library, action plans, benchmarking and turnover analysis, DEI analytics, and onboarding and offboarding surveys.
  • Compensation: compensation reviews, budget management, promotion reviews, pay gap analytics, flexible approvers and salary and bonus bands. Market benchmarks are an add-on.

AI features (as Leapsome describes them)

Leapsome's AI Review Assistant helps write feedback with voice or text input, guided prompts, reframing suggestions and evidence-based drafts. Calibration gets AI pre-reads that spot rating anomalies across teams. The HRIS Pro tier unlocks "advanced AI agents across the platform"; the Foundation tier has AI at a limited level.

Pricing

Leapsome lists prices per employee per month in EUR, USD and GBP, with the same numbers in each currency.

HRIS foundation (required):

  • Agentic HRIS Foundation: $7 per employee per month, free with at least one Talent Suite module when purchased by December 31, 2026.
  • Agentic HRIS Pro: $10 per employee per month, offered at $5 until December 31, 2026.

Talent Suite modules:

  • Performance Reviews: $7
  • Recruiting (ATS): $5
  • Goals & OKRs: $4
  • Engagement Surveys: $4
  • Learning: $4
  • Compensation: $3
  • Time Tracking: $3

Add-ons: Compensation benchmarks $3, and Learning content library from $1, both per employee per month.

Leapsome says there is no setup fee. Its FAQ is explicit that you cannot buy a single module without the platform: "Every module reads from your employee record, so the platform is always part of the plan." Multi-module and volume discounts are applied in the quote, not on the page. Leapsome mentions a 14-day free trial on the pricing page, and its FAQ says sandbox access is available after a consultation.

Pros

  • Transparent, low module prices that let you buy exactly what you need.
  • Calibration with AI pre-reads, plus 1:1s and feedback included in the base platform.
  • Compensation, learning and recruiting are available from the same vendor, all reading from one employee record.
  • No setup fee.

Cons

  • The HRIS foundation is mandatory, which is awkward if you already run another HRIS (and the current free offer ends December 31, 2026).
  • Costs add up with several modules: Performance, Goals and Engagement together are $15 per employee per month before the HRIS fee.
  • The pricing page does not state billing frequency; check the term in your quote.

Who it's for

Growing companies, especially those with European operations, that want performance, engagement, compensation and an HRIS from one vendor, or that are replacing an older HRIS at the same time.

BambooHR review

What it is

BambooHR is an HRIS for small and mid-sized businesses. Performance management is not sold as a separate product; it is included in the Pro and Elite plans. That makes it a different kind of choice from the specialists: you get reviews inside your HR system of record, but with fewer advanced controls.

Key features (Pro and Elite)

  • Reviews and cycles: custom review cycles with pre-built or fully customizable templates, segmented by department, location or job title.
  • 360° feedback: self, manager, peer and skip-level reviews.
  • 1:1s: scheduling, note-keeping and agenda tracking.
  • Goals: goal tracking for individuals and teams (listed for both Pro and Elite in the plan comparison table).
  • Reporting: instant reporting on company-wide and employee-specific performance.
  • Engagement: eNPS and Employee Wellbeing surveys are included from Core upward, with AI that categorizes free-text eNPS responses into themes.
  • Compensation (Elite only): compensation planning, Mercer salary benchmarking, and levels and bands.
  • Calibration: we did not find calibration listed on BambooHR's pricing or performance management pages.

AI features (as BambooHR describes them)

BambooHR's AI Assistant ("Ask BambooHR") answers HR data questions on Core, goes deeper into company policies and documents on Pro, and handles benchmark questions and analysis on Elite. The AI that categorizes eNPS comments is included from Core. BambooHR's performance management page does not describe AI review writing.

Pricing

  • Core: $10 per employee per month. No performance management.
  • Pro: $17 per employee per month. Adds performance management, recognition and rewards, and employee community.
  • Elite: $25 per employee per month. Adds compensation management, custom dashboards, HR benchmarks and premium services.

For companies with 25 or fewer employees, BambooHR charges a flat monthly rate: $250 for Core, $425 for Pro and $650 for Elite. Note that BambooHR's pricing FAQ lists slightly different per-employee starting prices ($10.25 for Core and $17.50 for Pro, $25 for Elite) than the plan cards, so confirm the rate in your quote. Volume discounts are applied automatically, nonprofits get an additional 15% off, and you can choose month-to-month or longer terms. Payroll, Benefits Administration, Time & Attendance and Global Employment are add-ons without published prices.

Pros

  • Reviews, 1:1s and goals live in the same system as employee records, with no integration to maintain.
  • Month-to-month terms are available, unlike every specialist here.
  • A flat rate for companies with 25 or fewer employees makes the small-company cost predictable.
  • eNPS and wellbeing surveys are included even on Core.

Cons

  • No calibration listed, and review features are simpler than the specialist tools.
  • Compensation planning requires the Elite plan at $25 per employee per month.
  • You pay for the whole HRIS, so it only makes sense if you need the HR system too.

Who it's for

Small businesses, roughly 10 to 150 employees, that need an HRIS anyway and want straightforward reviews and 1:1s without buying a second tool.

Betterworks review

What it is

Betterworks is an enterprise performance management platform with roots in OKRs. It sells a Performance package, a Performance + Talent Intelligence package, and an Enterprise tier that adds engagement surveys and change management services.

Key features

  • Reviews and cycles: "Conversations" for running review cycles, built on what Betterworks calls real-time performance evidence from day-to-day work.
  • Calibration: "Anytime Calibration," included in the Performance + Talent Intelligence package.
  • 1:1s: 1:1 meetings with automated summaries, notes and follow-ups, plus conversational intelligence that turns meeting transcripts into performance insights.
  • Goals & OKRs: team and individual goals aligned to company priorities, with progress tracking.
  • Feedback: real-time feedback.
  • Talent intelligence: succession and talent mobility, skills intelligence, a unified talent profile and individual development plans with AI recommendations.
  • Engagement: the Engage product is listed in the Enterprise tier, though the FAQ says organizations can start with Engagement as a standalone product.
  • Compensation: not listed on the pricing page.

AI features (as Betterworks describes them)

Betterworks says AI is "embedded throughout the solution" and included in pricing. It describes AI goal recommendations aligned to strategy and role, AI summaries from 1:1s, feedback and check-ins, skills inference from work signals combined with manager validation, and writing help so managers "never start with a blank text box."

Pricing

  • Performance: $8 per user per month.
  • Performance + Talent Intelligence: $9 per user per month.
  • Enterprise: custom.

Implementation is "a one time cost in addition to the per user per month pricing," and Signature Support is an extra-cost option. Betterworks does not state a formal minimum, but its FAQ says it "adds the most value for organizations with over 500 employees." Billing frequency is not stated on the pricing page.

Pros

  • Low published per-user prices for an enterprise-grade platform.
  • Calibration, succession and skills intelligence for only $1 more per user per month.
  • Strong OKR heritage and AI summaries from 1:1s and check-ins.

Cons

  • Implementation is an additional one-time cost with no published price.
  • Engagement surveys sit in the Enterprise tier on the pricing page.
  • Positioned for 500+ employee organizations; smaller teams will find it heavy.

Who it's for

Large and complex organizations, often already on an enterprise HRIS, that want goal alignment, continuous conversations and talent decisions on one platform.

PerformYard review

What it is

PerformYard is a performance management platform for mid-sized organizations, known for handling unusual review processes: different cycles for different teams, competency-based reviews, project-based reviews and new-hire assessments. It sells two products, Performance and Talent Development.

Key features

  • Reviews and cycles: annual reviews, quarterly check-ins, 360 feedback, competency-based reviews, project-based reviews, new-hire assessments and PIPs.
  • Calibration: nine-box and calibration views, plus rating distributions and trend analysis.
  • 1:1s: shared agendas and talking points, with notes and action items.
  • Goals: individual, team and company goals with cascading and aligned objectives.
  • Feedback: real-time recognition and feedback, public or private.
  • Engagement: anonymous surveys with benchmarks, trend tracking, eNPS and custom pulses.
  • Compensation (Talent Development): merit cycles tied to performance, with budget workflows.

AI features (as PerformYard describes them)

PerformYard says its intelligence layer, covering "writing assist, summaries, coaching prompts and talent insights," is included in every plan.

Pricing

  • Performance: $5 to $15 per person per month. Covers reviews, meetings, goals, engagement, feedback and surveys.
  • Talent Development: $5 to $15 per person per month. Covers compensation, coaching, competencies, succession planning, employee insights and career pathing.

PerformYard prices per seat, billed annually, with cost depending on headcount and products, and volume pricing for larger organizations. It says there are never additional fees for onboarding or training, and every customer gets a dedicated customer success manager. It integrates with HRIS and identity tools including ADP, BambooHR, Gusto, Paylocity, Rippling, UKG, Workday, Okta and Slack.

Pros

  • Very flexible review configuration for organizations with multiple review types.
  • AI, onboarding, training and a dedicated success manager are included.
  • Engagement surveys are part of the Performance product rather than a separate module.
  • Broad HRIS integration list, including BambooHR, so it can sit on top of an existing system.

Cons

  • The $5 to $15 range is wide; you only learn your exact rate from a quote.
  • Less name recognition and a smaller ecosystem than Lattice or Culture Amp.
  • Annual billing only.

Who it's for

Mid-sized companies (roughly 50 to 1,000 employees) in services, healthcare, finance and similar industries that run complex review processes and want hands-on support.

How to Choose: Decision Rules That Actually Help

Start by deciding what problem you are solving, because each tool leans in a different direction.

If your reviews are the problem (late, inconsistent, written from memory), prioritize review flexibility, calibration and how well 1:1s and feedback feed the review. Lattice, PerformYard and Leapsome are strongest here. Choose PerformYard if you run several kinds of reviews across teams; choose Lattice if you also want goals and 1:1s in the same tool from day one.

If your managers are the problem (skipped 1:1s, vague expectations), pick the tool that builds weekly habits. 15Five's check-ins and 1:1 workflow are built for this, and its paid AI and human coaching add-ons target manager skills directly.

If you do not know what your employees think, start with engagement. Culture Amp's survey science and benchmarks lead here, with 15Five Engage ($4) and Lattice Engagement ($4) as cheaper published options.

If you need pay decisions tied to performance, check compensation support. Lattice (+$6), Leapsome ($3, plus $3 for benchmarks), 15Five ($9 to $11), BambooHR Elite and PerformYard Talent Development all offer it. Culture Amp and Betterworks do not list a compensation product.

If you do not have an HRIS yet, look at BambooHR (HRIS with performance built in) or Leapsome (HRIS foundation plus modules). If you already have an HRIS you like, avoid Leapsome's mandatory platform and pick a tool that integrates with yours.

If you have more than 500 employees and run OKRs, shortlist Betterworks alongside Lattice and Culture Amp, and budget for implementation.

If you have fewer than 30 employees, watch minimums. Lattice's $4,000 minimum is more than its per-seat math at that size, and BambooHR's flat rate applies up to 25 employees. 15Five states no minimum on standard packages.

Pricing Comparison: What You Would Actually Pay

These examples use list prices from each vendor's pricing page in October 2026. They ignore volume discounts, multi-module discounts, taxes and negotiated rates, so real quotes will often be lower. Culture Amp is excluded because it publishes no prices. All figures are annual.

Example 1: 25 employees, reviews plus goals and 1:1s

  • Lattice Foundations: $13 x 25 x 12 = $3,900. That is below the $4,000 minimum annual agreement, so you would pay $4,000.
  • 15Five Perform: $11 x 25 x 12 = $3,300.
  • Leapsome: Performance Reviews ($7) + Goals & OKRs ($4) = $11 per employee per month, with the HRIS Foundation free if you buy by December 31, 2026. $11 x 25 x 12 = $3,300. After the offer ends, adding the $7 Foundation makes it $18 x 25 x 12 = $5,400.
  • BambooHR Pro: flat rate of $425 per month for 25 or fewer employees: $425 x 12 = $5,100. This includes the full HRIS, not just performance.
  • PerformYard Performance: $5 to $15 x 25 x 12 = $1,500 to $4,500, depending on your quote.

Example 2: 100 employees, performance plus engagement surveys

  • Lattice: Foundations ($13) + Engagement ($4) = $17. $17 x 100 x 12 = $20,400. (Performance alone plus Engagement would be $14, or $16,800.)
  • 15Five Total Platform: $16 x 100 x 12 = $19,200.
  • Leapsome: Performance Reviews ($7) + Goals & OKRs ($4) + Engagement Surveys ($4) = $15. $15 x 100 x 12 = $18,000 with the free Foundation offer, or $22 x 100 x 12 = $26,400 at the regular $7 Foundation price.
  • BambooHR Pro: $17 x 100 x 12 = $20,400 at the plan-card price (or $21,000 at the $17.50 FAQ price), before automatic volume discounts. This includes the HRIS, and eNPS surveys are included.
  • PerformYard Performance: $5 to $15 x 100 x 12 = $6,000 to $18,000, with engagement surveys included.

Example 3: 100 employees, full suite with compensation

  • Lattice: Foundations ($13) + Engagement ($4) + Compensation ($6) + Grow ($4) = $27. $27 x 100 x 12 = $32,400.
  • 15Five: Total Platform ($16) + Compensation Base Package ($9) = $25. $25 x 100 x 12 = $30,000. Add Kona Notetaker ($2) for $32,400.
  • Leapsome: Performance ($7) + Goals ($4) + Engagement ($4) + Compensation ($3) + Compensation benchmarks ($3) = $21. $21 x 100 x 12 = $25,200 with the free Foundation, or $33,600 with the $7 Foundation.
  • BambooHR Elite: $25 x 100 x 12 = $30,000, including the HRIS and compensation planning with Mercer benchmarks.

The pattern: at small sizes, minimums and flat rates matter more than per-seat prices. At 100 employees, most full suites land in the $20,000 to $33,000 range at list price. At 500+ employees, Betterworks' $8 to $9 per user looks low ($9 x 500 x 12 = $54,000 for Performance + Talent Intelligence), but implementation and support tiers shift the total.

Common Mistakes and Hidden Costs

  • Ignoring minimums. Lattice's $4,000 minimum annual agreement and BambooHR's flat rate up to 25 employees both raise the effective per-person price for small teams.
  • Forgetting the platform fee. Leapsome modules require the HRIS foundation. The Foundation is free with a Talent Suite module only for purchases by December 31, 2026; plan for $7 per employee per month after that.
  • Counting AI as included when it is not. Lattice, Culture Amp, Betterworks and PerformYard say AI is included. 15Five's Kona Notetaker ($2 per employee) and Kona Coach ($19 per manager) are add-ons.
  • Buying compensation later. Adding compensation at renewal can nearly double your per-seat price with 15Five or move you up a whole plan with BambooHR. If merit cycles matter, price it on day one.
  • Overlooking implementation. Betterworks charges a one-time implementation fee on top of subscription pricing. Lattice and PerformYard say implementation or onboarding is included at no extra cost, and Leapsome says there is no setup fee.
  • Annual lock-in. Lattice, 15Five, Culture Amp and PerformYard bill annually. BambooHR offers month-to-month terms. Pilot carefully before you sign a year.
  • Skipping calibration. If you use ratings to drive pay or promotions, calibration is essential. BambooHR does not list it; Betterworks puts it in its higher package.

Final Recommendation

Lattice is our top pick for most companies. It covers every part of a modern performance program (reviews, calibration, 1:1s, goals, engagement, compensation and career growth) with published per-seat prices, and the AI Agent comes with every base product. The $4,000 minimum is the main reason to look elsewhere if you are very small.

Choose 15Five for manager habits, Culture Amp for engagement depth, Leapsome for an HRIS plus low-cost modules, BambooHR for small companies that need an HRIS anyway, Betterworks for large enterprises running OKRs, and PerformYard for complex review processes at a mid-market price.

Whatever you pick, run one real review cycle as a pilot with a few teams, check how managers use 1:1s and goals between cycles, and price the modules you will need in year two, not just year one.

Frequently asked questions

For most growing companies, Lattice is the best all-round choice: it covers reviews, calibration, 1:1s, goals, engagement, compensation and growth with published per-seat prices. 15Five is a strong alternative if manager habits are the priority, and Culture Amp leads if engagement surveys come first.
