Why Your Chatbot Builder Choice Matters
A few years ago, a business chatbot was a decision tree: buttons, canned replies and a form at the end. Today most builders let you train an AI agent on your website, help docs and product data, then put it on your site, in WhatsApp and in Instagram DMs. The demos all look similar. The bills and the day-to-day work do not.
Three things decide whether a chatbot builder works for your business:
- Who builds it. Some tools are truly no-code: paste a URL, upload a PDF, publish a widget. Others give you a visual canvas plus code, APIs and version control, which is great if you have a developer and frustrating if you do not.
- How you pay for usage. Every tool here meters something different: message credits, conversations, AI chats, active contacts or a dollar balance for AI spend. The same 1,000 customer chats can cost very different amounts depending on the unit, the AI model and how many messages each chat takes.
- Where the conversation goes when the AI gets stuck. An AI agent that cannot hand a conversation to a person, with the history attached, creates angry customers. Some tools include a shared inbox, some route to Zendesk or Salesforce, and some leave handoff to you.
Channels matter too. Website chat is table stakes. WhatsApp and Instagram are where many customers actually message businesses, and each tool supports them differently, from fully native to "connect it through the API".
How we chose
This guide compares six tools that small and mid-sized businesses actually shortlist for AI chat agents:
- No-code AI agents trained on your content: Chatbase, Tidio (Lyro)
- Builder platforms for developers and technical teams: Botpress, Voiceflow
- Lead capture and WhatsApp flows: Landbot
- Instagram and social DM automation: ManyChat
We compared each tool's published plans and prices, what counts as a billable unit, how LLM usage is charged, which channels are supported, and how human handoff works. All prices and limits come from each vendor's own pricing page and documentation as of October 2026. We did not run hands-on tests for this guide, so check the vendor's site before you commit, because AI pricing in this category changes often.
Chatbase
Chatbase is the most direct way to go from "we have a website and help docs" to "we have an AI agent answering questions". You add sources (website pages, files, text), pick a model, set instructions and deploy. It also supports AI Actions, which let the agent do things such as book a meeting or look up an order, instead of only answering.
Pricing in plain words. There is no free plan, only a 7-day trial on paid plans. Hobby costs $40/month, or $32/month billed yearly, with 700 message credits a month, one agent and two seats. Standard costs $150/month, or $120/month billed yearly, with 4,000 credits, three seats, API access, voice and the Chatbase helpdesk inbox. Pro costs $500/month, or $400/month billed yearly, with 15,000 credits and five seats. Extra credits cost $40 per 1,000, extra agents are $300 per agent per year, and removing Chatbase branding is $118/year.
How LLM costs work. Every AI response uses message credits. Most models cost 1 credit per response, while Chatbase's documentation lists premium models (larger GPT, Claude, Gemini and Grok models) at 2 to 6 credits per response. Agents that call AI Actions can make several model requests for one answer. In practice, picking a premium model can cut the number of replies your plan covers by half or more. Credits renew on the 1st of each month.
Channels and handoff. Chatbase deploys as a website chat bubble, help page or iframe, mobile SDKs for iOS and Android, and to WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram, email and Slack. It also connects to Zendesk, Salesforce, Shopify, WordPress, Zapier and phone through Twilio or SIP. Human escalation through the helpdesk inbox is included on Standard and Pro; Hobby does not include it.
Who it is for. Small and mid-sized businesses that want an AI support or sales agent live on their website and messaging channels this week, without a developer.
Where it falls short. Each plan includes one agent, so several brands or departments mean paying for extra agents. The jump from Hobby to Standard is large, and Standard is where API access, advanced integrations and the helpdesk inbox begin. There is no visual flow builder for strict, step-by-step processes.
Botpress
Botpress is a platform for building AI agents, not just a chatbot widget. Botpress Studio gives you a visual canvas with autonomous nodes, knowledge bases, tables and workflows, plus code where you need it. Botpress Desk adds an AI helpdesk for human agents, and the integration hub covers a long list of apps and channels.
Pricing in plain words. The Free plan includes 100 conversations a month, three AI agents and three seats, with no top-ups. Plus is $150/month billed annually and includes 250 conversations, $25 of AI usage, unlimited agents, three seats, WhatsApp and white-label webchat. Team is $750/month billed annually with 1,500 conversations, $150 of AI usage, unlimited seats, teams, routing, role-based access and team analytics. Enterprise is custom and adds voice and an uptime SLA.
How LLM costs work. Botpress separates two meters. A conversation is any exchange with at least two messages from the end user in a billing month. When you near your quota, Botpress automatically adds packs of 100 conversations ($65 on Plus, $50 on Team), and this auto-recharge cannot be turned off. AI usage is the actual cost of calling LLMs: when you reach 95% of your AI spend, Botpress buys a $10 credit grant at cost, and unused grants carry over for up to 12 months. That makes AI costs transparent, but you are paying for model usage on top of the plan.
Channels and handoff. Pricing lists webchat and WhatsApp, and Botpress has official integrations for Instagram, Messenger, Telegram, Slack, Microsoft Teams and more. Human handoff runs through Botpress Desk or through HITL integrations with Zendesk, Salesforce, Intercom, Twilio Flex, LiveAgent and others. Routing and assignment rules are on Team.
Who it is for. Businesses with a developer or technical builder who want custom logic, many channels, their own data and integrations, and full visibility into LLM spend.
Where it falls short. It takes longer to learn than Chatbase or Tidio. The jump from Free to Plus is steep for a small business, and Plus includes only three seats. Conversation packs that cannot be switched off make bills less predictable during traffic spikes.
Voiceflow
Voiceflow is aimed at customer experience teams that need control over every detail of an agent. You combine agentic "playbooks" with deterministic workflows, add knowledge bases and API, function and MCP tools, then run the agent through development, staging and production environments with tests and LLM-powered evaluations.
Pricing in plain words. Voiceflow no longer lists plan prices on its pricing page. Businesses are asked to book a demo or request pricing, and agencies can start a free trial with no credit card. Voiceflow's billing documentation describes four plans: Free (a one-time credit grant that does not renew, not meant for production), Pro (all LLM models and more agents), Business (adds LLM fallback models and priority support) and Enterprise (SSO, private cloud hosting, custom credit allotments). Current prices for plans, editor seats and credit bundles are shown inside the app.
How LLM costs work. Voiceflow charges usage in credits. Agents consume credits when they generate AI responses or make phone calls. Paid plans include a monthly credit allotment shared across workspaces, and you can buy higher credit bundles or turn on auto top-ups. Voiceflow also supports choosing between major LLM providers or bringing your own model.
Channels and handoff. A web chat widget with a voice mode, phone numbers (provisioned by Voiceflow in the US and Canada, or through Twilio, Vonage or Telnyx), SMS and any custom interface through the API. WhatsApp and Instagram are not listed among its native channels, so plan on building those through the API. The live agent handoff step passes conversations to Zendesk, Genesys, UJET, Kustomer or Dixa, and the call forward step transfers phone calls.
Who it is for. Mid-market and enterprise support teams, and agencies building agents for clients, especially when phone and chat agents share the same logic.
Where it falls short. No public pricing makes it hard to budget without a sales call. It is more than a small business needs for a website FAQ bot. Native social messaging channels are limited compared with Chatbase, Tidio or ManyChat.
Tidio
Tidio is a customer service platform first: live chat, ticketing, an email inbox and integrations with WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger and email. On top of that sit two add-ons. Lyro AI Agent answers questions from your FAQ, website and help content and hands off to a person when it should. Flows are no-code automations for lead capture, quote requests and missed conversations.
Pricing in plain words. The Free plan includes 50 billable conversations a month, 10 seats, 50 Lyro conversations (one-off) and 100 Flows visitors. Starter costs $29/month, or $24.17/month billed annually, for 100 billable conversations. Growth starts at $59/month, or $49.17/month billed annually, for 250 conversations, and adds advanced analytics, permissions, automatic chat assignment and macros. Plus starts at $300/month plus usage, and Premium is custom with a guaranteed 50% Lyro resolution rate and pay-per-resolution billing.
How AI costs work. Lyro is priced by AI conversations, separately from the human conversations in your plan. It starts at $39/month, or $32.50/month billed annually, for 50 Lyro conversations, and Tidio's calculator goes up to 1,000 a month ($700/month on monthly billing). You do not pick or pay for the model directly, which is simpler, but the cost per AI conversation is higher than message-credit tools at volume. Flows start at $29/month, or $24.17/month billed annually, for 2,000 visitors reached.
Channels and handoff. Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp and email integrations are listed on every plan, alongside live chat. Handoff is Tidio's strength: Lyro passes the conversation into the same inbox your team already works in. Removing Tidio branding is an add-on at $16.67/month.
Who it is for. Small online stores and service businesses that need a shared inbox for people and want AI to take the repetitive questions.
Where it falls short. Three separate meters (billable conversations, Lyro conversations and Flows visitors) make the real bill harder to predict. AI conversations get expensive at volume. It is less flexible than Botpress or Voiceflow for custom agent logic.
Landbot
Landbot is a no-code builder known for conversational lead capture: a chat that qualifies a visitor, books a meeting or collects a quote request, on your website or WhatsApp. It mixes button-based flows for critical paths with AI agents grounded in your knowledge base where open-ended answers help.
Pricing in plain words. Landbot lists prices in euros (customers outside the EU are billed in dollars). Free includes 100 chats a month, one seat, web only and a WhatsApp test number, with no AI chats. Starter costs €40/month, or €32/month billed annually, with 500 chats, 100 AI chats and two seats. Professional costs €100/month, or €80/month billed annually, with 2,500 chats, 300 AI chats, three seats, no Landbot branding, webhooks, API and integrations such as HubSpot, Salesforce, Pipedrive and Zoho. The Professional WA plan, which includes one WhatsApp number and 500 AI chats, is listed at €160/month. Business is custom, from €400/month. Extra seats are €25/month.
How AI costs work. Landbot counts three things separately: regular chats, AI chats and WhatsApp conversations. Extra chats cost €0.05 each (billed in 500-chat packs of €25), and extra AI chats cost €0.10 each. On WhatsApp, Meta's own fees apply; Landbot adds €0.05 per marketing, utility or authentication message on Professional WA. Landbot alerts you at 80% and 90% of your included chats.
Channels and handoff. Web, Messenger, WhatsApp and API chat. Human takeover with a shared inbox is included, with each person using a seat.
Who it is for. Marketing and sales teams that want a branded, structured lead capture bot, especially on WhatsApp, with AI as a helper rather than the whole bot.
Where it falls short. WhatsApp with your own number starts at the Professional WA tier. Only 100 to 500 AI chats are included, so AI-heavy support gets expensive. Instagram is not listed among its channels.
ManyChat
ManyChat is the leading tool for automating Instagram DMs and comments, and it also covers TikTok, WhatsApp, Messenger, Telegram, SMS and email. Typical uses are "comment a keyword, get a DM with the link", collecting emails from DMs and answering product questions. Manychat AI adds AI replies, AI comment replies, an AI Step inside flows, intention recognition and a flow builder assistant.
Pricing in plain words. Pricing is based on Active Contacts: one person you interact with in a month counts once, however many messages you exchange. Free covers 25 Active Contacts, two channels, up to four active automations and one user. Essential is $17/month, or $14/month billed annually, for 250 contacts and two users. Pro is $39/month, or $29/month billed annually, for 2,500 contacts, three channels, three users and Manychat AI. Business is $99/month, or $69/month billed annually, for 7,500 contacts, unlimited channels, five users and a shared team inbox with assignments. Advanced is $199/month, or $139/month billed annually, for 25,000 contacts and 10 users. Prices vary by billing country.
How AI costs work. Manychat AI is included from Pro, not sold per message. Overage is per extra Active Contact: $0.10 on Essential, $0.05 on Pro, $0.025 on Business and $0.004 on Advanced (lower on annual billing). You can set an overage threshold.
Channels and handoff. Instagram, Facebook Messenger, TikTok, Telegram, WhatsApp, SMS and email, with a unified inbox where your team can take over conversations. Assignments and a shared team inbox start on Business.
Who it is for. Creators, ecommerce brands and marketers who sell through Instagram, TikTok or WhatsApp and want DMs to turn into leads and sales.
Where it falls short. It is not built for website support or training an agent on a large help center. Channel limits on lower plans (two or three) can force an upgrade. Team features need Business.

No-Code vs Developer Platforms
The biggest split in this list is who does the building.
No-code tools (Chatbase, Tidio, Landbot, ManyChat) let a marketer or support lead build and launch without help. You give them content and goals, and the tool handles hosting, the model and the widget. The trade-off is less control: limited custom logic, fewer ways to call your own systems, and pricing that bundles in the model cost.
Developer platforms (Botpress, Voiceflow) give you a visual canvas but expect you to think like a builder: variables, tools, APIs, environments and testing. You get more control over what the agent does, which model it uses and how it connects to your systems. You also take on more setup time and, on Botpress, a separate bill for LLM usage.
A simple test: if nobody on your team has written an API call or a webhook, start with a no-code tool. If you need the agent to check orders in your own database, follow strict compliance steps or handle phone calls, a developer platform will save you from hitting a wall later.
How to Choose by Use Case
- AI answers on your website, trained on your docs: Chatbase. Fastest setup, wide model choice, and WhatsApp and Instagram on the same agent.
- A small support team that answers chats by hand today: Tidio. Keep the inbox you need and add Lyro for repetitive questions.
- Custom agents that call your systems: Botpress, if you have a developer and want transparent LLM costs.
- Enterprise support across chat and phone: Voiceflow, with environments, evaluations and handoff to enterprise contact center tools.
- Lead capture and qualification, especially on WhatsApp: Landbot.
- Selling through Instagram, TikTok or WhatsApp DMs: ManyChat.
- Lowest cost to start: ManyChat, Tidio, Landbot and Botpress all have free plans. Chatbase does not.
Pricing Comparison
Comparing prices is hard because each tool charges for a different unit. Here is what each entry plan includes on annual billing:
| Tool | Entry paid plan (annual) | What's included | Extra usage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chatbase | Hobby, $32/month | 700 message credits, 1 agent, 2 seats | $40 per 1,000 credits |
| Botpress | Plus, $150/month | 250 conversations, $25 AI usage, 3 seats | $65 per 100 conversations; AI spend at cost |
| Voiceflow | Not published | Credits per plan | Credit bundles and auto top-ups |
| Tidio | Starter, $24.17/month | 100 billable conversations, 10 seats | Lyro AI from $32.50/month for 50 conversations |
| Landbot | Starter, €32/month | 500 chats, 100 AI chats, 2 seats | €0.05 per chat, €0.10 per AI chat |
| ManyChat | Essential, $14/month | 250 Active Contacts, 2 users | $0.082 per extra contact |
What to watch for:
- Model choice changes the bill. On Chatbase, a premium model can use 2 to 6 credits per reply instead of 1. On Botpress, larger models burn through the included AI usage faster.
- Conversation length matters differently. Botpress, Tidio and Landbot count conversations or chats, so long chats cost the same as short ones. Chatbase counts each AI response, so long chats cost more.
- AI is often priced separately. Tidio's Lyro and Landbot's AI chats are separate meters from human or flow-based conversations.
- WhatsApp has its own fees. Meta charges for some WhatsApp messages, and tools such as Landbot add a small fee on top. Check this before planning WhatsApp broadcasts.
- Annual billing saves roughly 17% to 30% on most of these tools, but locks you in for a year. ManyChat, for example, does not let you downgrade an annual plan until the term ends.
Final Recommendation
For most businesses building their first AI chat agent for website support and lead capture, Chatbase is the best place to start. It is the quickest route from your existing content to a working agent, it supports the major LLMs, and the same agent can run on your website, WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger. Budget for Standard if you need human handoff or API access.
If your team already answers chats by hand and needs an inbox as much as an AI agent, Tidio is the better fit. If you have a developer and want full control and transparent LLM costs, choose Botpress. Enterprise support teams running chat and phone agents should talk to Voiceflow. Pick Landbot for structured lead capture and WhatsApp flows, and ManyChat if your customers find you on Instagram and TikTok.
