An Instagram scheduler has one job that matters more than any other: publishing your post, carousel, Reel or Story at the right time without you opening the app. After that, the differences are in the details Instagram-first accounts care about. Can it post Stories automatically or does it send you a reminder? Can it add the first comment? Can you see your grid before it goes live? Does it include a link-in-bio page, hashtag tools, best times to post and analytics that go beyond what Instagram shows you?
This guide compares six Instagram scheduling tools for creators, brands and small agencies: Later, Planoly, Buffer, Metricool, Iconosquare and Flick. We compare how each handles auto-publishing for every format, first comments, grid preview, link in bio, hashtags, best times, analytics and account requirements, plus what each costs. Prices were checked on each vendor's own site in October 2026 and are in USD, except Flick, which only shows prices in GBP. We did not test these tools hands-on; everything below comes from vendor pricing pages, product pages and help centers.
Comparison Table
Pricing checked October 2026 on each vendor's site.

Later review
Later sells its scheduler as Later Social, alongside influencer marketing and affiliate products. Its plans are built around Social Sets: one Social Set is one profile each on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Pinterest, LinkedIn, YouTube, Threads and Snapchat. For an Instagram-first account, the useful thing is how much of the Instagram toolkit sits on the cheapest plan.
Key features
- Auto Publish for Instagram posts, carousels, Stories and Reels on Instagram business and creator accounts, with a notification publishing option when you want to add music or stickers in the app
- A visual calendar with a drag-and-drop feed preview, so you can rearrange posts before they go live
- Link in Bio on every plan, with unlimited buttons, up to 5 links per Instagram feed post including Reels, a shoppable feed, email capture, no Later branding and link analytics
- Personalized best times to post for Instagram Feed, Reels and Stories on every plan
- Hashtag search and automatic hashtag suggestions, and hashtags posted as a first comment when auto publishing
- Instagram Reels audio, reposting content from hashtags and business accounts, and Instagram Shop product tagging on Growth and Scale
Pricing
- Starter: $25/month, or $18.75/month billed yearly. 1 Social Set, 1 user, 30 posts per profile per month, 5 AI credits and 3 months of analytics.
- Growth: $50/month, or $37.50/month billed yearly. 2 Social Sets, 2 users, 180 posts per profile per month, a social inbox for Instagram DMs, comments and mentions, approvals and 1 year of analytics. Extra Social Sets, users and AI credits can be added.
- Scale: $110/month, or $82.50/month billed yearly. 6 Social Sets, 4 users, unlimited posts, competitive benchmarking and 2 years of analytics.
Yearly billing is 25% off. There is a 14-day trial with no credit card, and no ongoing no-cost plan. Later's post count includes Reels, Stories and carousels, and a post counts when it is scheduled.
Pros
- Every Instagram format, the feed preview and Link in Bio on the entry plan
- Best times are personalized per format: Feed, Reels and Stories
- One price covers a profile on 8 networks, including TikTok and Pinterest
Cons
- Starter's 30 posts per profile per month is roughly one post a day, Stories included
- The inbox, approvals and product tagging need Growth
- Later notes that, because of Instagram's rules, users can only be tagged in single-image Auto Publish posts, and locations only on single image and video posts
Who it's for: creators, shops, salons, cafes and small brands that plan around the Instagram grid and want scheduling, link in bio, hashtags and Instagram analytics in one place.
Who should skip it: accounts that post several Stories a day on a small budget (the Starter cap fills quickly), and teams that need X, Bluesky or Google Business Profile, which Later does not list.
Planoly review
Planoly says it "invented grid planning", and the grid is still the center of the product. It has grown into a cross-platform planner for Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, Facebook, YouTube, Threads and Pinterest, plus a Creator Store for selling from your link in bio.
Key features
- A visual planner for the Instagram grid with drag and drop, recurring placeholders that hold a spot for future content, and Grid, Reels and Stories tabs in the mobile app
- Scheduling for grid posts, carousels, Reels and Stories. Planoly auto-posts when the platform allows it, and sends a push notification with your caption ready when you need native music or editing tools. Reels that already have original audio auto-post
- An auto-posted first comment on Instagram posts and Reels on every paid plan
- Instagram post options for location, tagging people (up to 20 per photo), tagging products, cover photo, up to 3 collaborators and excluding a post from the main grid
- Quick Schedule and Best Time to Post, which needs a linked Instagram Business or Creator account
- Keywords & Captions (formerly Hashtag Manager) for saved hashtag sets of up to 30 hashtags, an AI caption writer and an AI idea generator
- A free Link in Bio storefront for digital products, services, bookings and merch with zero transaction fees, plus Instagram comment and DM automations
- Analytics, including Instagram analytics, post performance and shareable reports, on every paid plan
Pricing
- Free: in the Planoly mobile app, with 10 uploads per month. The count resets on the first of the month.
- Starter: $16/month billed monthly, or $14/month billed annually. 1 Social Set, 1 user, unlimited posts. No add-ons.
- Growth: $28/month, or $24/month billed annually. 2 Social Sets, 2 users. Extra Social Sets $10/month, extra users $5/month.
- Pro: $55/month, or $47/month billed annually. 6 Social Sets, 6 users. Extra Social Sets $8/month, extra users $3/month.
A Social Set is one of each channel. Annual plans are billed upfront and save up to 15%. Every paid plan has a 14-day trial, and you are not charged until it ends. One caution: Planoly's home page plan cards list Starter with "up to 60 uploads per month", while its pricing page and help center say unlimited, so check the plan at checkout.
Pros
- The lowest paid entry here, with unlimited posts on every paid plan
- First comment, best times, analytics and link in bio are on every paid plan
- The link-in-bio storefront can sell products with zero transaction fees
Cons
- The free plan works only in the mobile app, with 10 uploads a month
- X is reminder-only; Planoly notifies you and you finish the post in the X app
- Starter cannot add a user or a second Social Set; you have to move up to Growth
Who it's for: creators, coaches and small shops who care how their grid looks and want to sell digital products or bookings from their bio without another tool.
Who should skip it: analytics-heavy brands and agencies that need deep reporting and benchmarks, and accounts that rely on X.
Buffer review
Buffer is a simple, low-cost scheduler that covers most networks. It is not Instagram-specific, but it auto-publishes every Instagram format and prices each account on its own, which keeps the bill small for one or two Instagram profiles.
Key features
- Instagram auto-publishing for images, videos, carousels (up to 10 images), Stories and Reels. Buffer falls back to notification publishing for some Reels and Stories, such as ones with music, stickers, links or collaborators, unsupported sizes, or personal accounts
- First comment scheduling for Instagram and a hashtag manager on Essentials and Team
- Start Page, a link-in-bio page, included on the free plan with some limits
- Best-time recommendations based on your account's recent Instagram performance
- A community inbox for replying to Instagram comments on posts and Reels (not DMs or Story replies)
- Scheduling to Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, LinkedIn, X, Pinterest, YouTube Shorts, Threads, Bluesky, Google Business Profile and Mastodon
Pricing
Buffer charges per channel. One connected social account is one channel.
- Free: up to 3 channels, 10 scheduled posts per channel at a time, 1 user, 30 days of insights.
- Essentials: $5 per channel/month billed yearly, or $6 billed monthly, for channels 1 to 10, with lower rates from the 11th channel. Adds first comment, the hashtag manager, unlimited analytics history and reports.
- Team: $10 per channel/month billed yearly, or $12 monthly. Adds unlimited team members, access levels and approval workflows.
Once you pay, every connected channel is billed, including the first 3. There is a 14-day trial of paid plans, and nonprofits get 50% off.
Pros
- A usable free plan for up to 3 channels
- Clear per-channel pricing that stays low for one or two Instagram accounts
- Unlimited team members on Team
Cons
- First comment and the hashtag manager are not on the free plan
- We found no Instagram grid preview on Buffer's pages
- The inbox handles comments, not Instagram DMs
Who it's for: creators and small businesses that post to Instagram plus a few other networks and want the lowest cost per account.
Who should skip it: grid-first accounts that want to plan the feed visually, and brands that need Instagram DMs in the inbox.
Metricool review
Metricool combines scheduling with strong analytics at a low price. Its plans count brands rather than accounts: a brand is one business with one profile on each network, which suits freelancers and small agencies.
Key features
- Instagram posts, carousels, Stories and Reels publish automatically, with "no annoying notifications", and Metricool can also schedule Trial Reels
- A feed preview with drag and drop
- Best times to post shown on the calendar, plus AI suggestions for best times
- SmartLinks link-in-bio pages on every plan, with multiple link-in-bio pages on Starter and up
- Reels and Stories analytics, hashtag analysis and competitor tracking; paid plans keep unlimited analytics history and add PDF and PPT reports
- Flows automations for comment-to-DM, keyword DM replies and story replies, which Metricool lists at no extra cost for a limited time
Pricing
- Free: 1 brand, every network except LinkedIn and X, 20 scheduled posts per month, 30 days of analytics.
- Starter: $20/month billed annually or $25 monthly for up to 5 brands; $36 annually or $45 monthly for up to 10 brands. Unlimited posts under fair use.
- Advanced: from $53/month billed annually or $67 monthly for 15 brands, up to 50 brands. Adds team and client management, roles and post approvals.
- Custom: by quote, with white label.
X needs a paid add-on on paid plans. Annual billing saves up to 24%.
Pros
- The free plan includes auto-publishing for every Instagram format and link in bio
- Starter covers up to 5 brands, which is cheap for a freelancer with several clients
- Analytics and reports are strong for the price
Cons
- The free plan allows 20 posts a month in total
- First comment scheduling is not confirmed on Metricool's pages
- Post approvals and client management need Advanced
Who it's for: creators and brands that want analytics, competitor tracking and reports alongside scheduling, and freelancers or small agencies running several small brands.
Who should skip it: accounts that rely on a scheduled first comment, and teams that need approvals on a small budget.
Iconosquare review
Iconosquare calls itself "analytics-first social media management". It covers Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, TikTok, X, Pinterest, Threads and YouTube.
Key features
- Scheduling and auto-publishing for Instagram posts, carousels, Reels and Stories, with the option to create a reminder and publish by hand instead
- Story auto-publishing for 1 to 10 Stories at a time. Stickers and links cannot be added from Iconosquare; to add mentions, music or GIFs, you switch off auto-publishing and finish the Story from a mobile notification
- First comment scheduling, Instagram collab posts with up to 3 collaborators, and an Instagram grid preview
- Best times to post based on your own followers' activity, shown in the content calendar
- 100+ Instagram KPIs, Reels and Stories analytics, tags and mentions tracking, custom dashboards and PDF or XLS reports
- An inbox for comments, Instagram and Facebook DMs and mentions, plus an Instagram Giveaway Picker
- Competitor, hashtag and industry benchmarks, campaign tracking and approval workflows on Scale
Pricing
Iconosquare says its prices vary by region and currency. In USD:
- Free: up to 2 profiles, 1 user, 10 posts per month per profile, 1 month of analytics.
- Starter: from $10/month billed yearly for 3 profiles, or $17/month for up to 5. 1 user, 30 posts per month, 1 year of analytics, AI content tools and custom dashboards.
- Launch: from $39/month billed yearly. 5 profiles, 1 user, 100 posts per month, automated reports, the inbox, and X publishing and analytics.
- Scale: from $79/month billed yearly for 5 profiles, rising to $259/month for 20. 3 users, unlimited posts, approval workflows, campaign tracking, competitor and hashtag monitoring and 2 years of analytics.
- Custom: from $139/month billed yearly, with flexible limits and white-label reporting.
Yearly billing gives 2 months free (up to 17%). The 14-day trial needs no credit card and includes every feature; afterwards, the account moves to the free plan if you do not pay. Iconosquare's help center notes a limit of 25 auto-published Instagram posts, Stories and Reels per day.
Pros
- The deepest Instagram analytics, reporting and benchmarking in this comparison
- A free plan for 2 profiles that continues after the trial
- Stories, carousels and Reels auto-publish, with first comment and collab posts
Cons
- Starter allows 30 posts a month in total, and Launch 100, which an account posting daily Stories can pass quickly
- The inbox starts on Launch; approvals and competitor tracking need Scale
- We found no link-in-bio tool on Iconosquare's pages
Who it's for: brands, multi-location businesses and agencies that schedule Instagram content but choose a tool mainly for analytics, reports for clients and benchmarking against competitors.
Who should skip it: creators who post a lot on a small budget, and anyone who wants a link-in-bio page in the same tool.
Flick review
Flick, from UK-based Flick.Tech, leads with its Instagram hashtag tools, and adds scheduling, Instagram analytics and an AI assistant called Iris. Flick says it uses only Instagram's official business account API. It schedules to Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and LinkedIn.
Key features
- Hashtag Search, Hashtag Collections and Suggested Hashtags, with metrics such as competition score, potential reach and average likes, and Smart Auditing that checks for banned or flagged hashtags
- Hashtag performance tracking that shows where your post ranks in each hashtag feed over time
- Instagram posts, carousels and Reels with automatic or notification posting, custom Reels thumbnails, tags, captions and locations
- Feed Preview and Best Times to Post on every plan, with your top three posting times each day from your own audience insights
- Instagram analytics for your account, content (feed, Stories and Reels), audience activity and hashtags, with history Flick says it stores indefinitely
- Iris, an AI assistant that builds a strategy, plans a monthly content calendar and drafts captions; Flick says it never posts without your approval
Pricing
Flick shows prices in GBP only, and they exclude tax.
- Solo: £14/month billed monthly, or £11/month billed yearly. 4 social profiles, 1 user, 30 scheduled posts per social per month, 30 tracked Instagram posts per month, and most features (no hashtag randomizer, CSV export or hashtag import).
- Pro: £30/month, or £24/month billed yearly. 8 profiles, 2 users, unlimited posts and tracking, all features.
- Agency: £68/month, or £55/month billed yearly. 20 profiles, 5 users.
Extra profiles cost £4/month on every plan, and extra users £8/month on Pro and Agency. Yearly billing saves 20%. Every plan has a 7-day trial; Flick charges you at the end unless you cancel.
Pros
- The most detailed hashtag research and tracking in this comparison
- Feed preview and best times on every plan
- Instagram analytics history is kept indefinitely
Cons
- Prices are in GBP only, plus tax, so US buyers pay a converted amount
- Flick's pricing page lists Instagram posts and Reels for scheduling; Story scheduling is not listed
- Only 4 networks, a short 7-day trial and no free plan
Who it's for: creators and small accounts whose growth depends on hashtags and who want hashtag research, scheduling and Instagram analytics in one tool.
Who should skip it: accounts that schedule Stories every day, brands that need a link-in-bio page, and teams posting to YouTube, Pinterest or Threads.
Head-to-head: what matters for Instagram scheduling
Auto-publishing for posts, carousels, Reels and Stories
All six tools publish Instagram feed posts, carousels and Reels automatically. Stories are where they differ.
| Tool | Feed posts and carousels | Reels | Stories | When it falls back to a reminder |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Later | Auto | Auto | Auto | When you choose notification publishing to add music or stickers |
| Planoly | Auto | Auto (with original audio) | Yes | When you need native music or editing tools |
| Buffer | Auto (up to 10 images) | Auto | Auto | Music, stickers, links, collaborators, unsupported sizes, personal accounts |
| Metricool | Auto | Auto, plus Trial Reels | Auto | Metricool says no notifications |
| Iconosquare | Auto | Auto | Auto, 1 to 10 at a time | Stickers, links, mentions, music or GIFs on Stories |
| Flick | Auto | Auto | Not listed | Notification posting available |
None of these vendors says it can add music or stickers to an auto-published Story. Later, Planoly, Buffer and Iconosquare all send a reminder for those so you can finish the post in the Instagram app.
First comment
Planoly includes an auto-posted first comment on posts and Reels on every paid plan, and Iconosquare lists first comment scheduling. Buffer includes it on Essentials and Team, not Free. Later posts hashtags as a first comment when auto publishing, on every plan. We could not confirm a first comment feature on Metricool's or Flick's pages.
Grid preview and visual planning
Planoly is the most grid-focused: placeholders hold a spot in the grid before the content exists, and the app shows Grid, Reels and Stories tabs. Later, Metricool, Iconosquare and Flick all offer a drag-and-drop feed preview. We did not find a grid preview on Buffer's pages, so plan the feed elsewhere if that matters to you.
Link in bio
| Tool | Link-in-bio tool | Plans |
|---|---|---|
| Later | Link in Bio: up to 5 links per feed post, shoppable feed, email capture, analytics | All plans |
| Planoly | Creator Store: sell digital products, bookings and merch with zero transaction fees | Free with every plan |
| Buffer | Start Page | Free plan included, with limits |
| Metricool | SmartLinks | All plans; multiple pages on Starter and up |
| Iconosquare | Not found | None |
| Flick | Not found | None |
Hashtags
Flick is the specialist: it scores hashtags by competition and potential reach, audits them for banned tags and tracks where your posts rank. Later offers hashtag search and automatic suggestions on every plan. Planoly stores hashtag sets of up to 30 tags in Keywords & Captions. Buffer's hashtag manager is on paid plans. Iconosquare and Metricool analyze hashtag performance, and Iconosquare's hashtag monitoring is on Scale.
Best time to post
Every tool here suggests posting times. Later personalizes them for Feed, Reels and Stories separately. Iconosquare and Flick use your own audience activity and show the times in the calendar; Flick highlights your top three times each day. Buffer bases its recommendations on your recent Instagram performance, and Metricool shows best times on the calendar with AI suggestions. Planoly's Best Time to Post needs a linked Business or Creator account.
Analytics
Iconosquare is the deepest, with 100+ Instagram KPIs, Reels and Stories analytics, custom dashboards, scheduled reports and, on Scale, competitor and industry benchmarks. Metricool is close for the price, with unlimited history on paid plans, competitor tracking and PDF or PPT reports. Flick focuses on Instagram analytics and hashtag performance and keeps history indefinitely. Later keeps 3 months of history on Starter and up to 2 years on Scale. Buffer keeps 30 days on Free and unlimited history on paid plans. Planoly includes Instagram analytics and shareable reports on every paid plan.
Account requirements
Auto-publishing works through Instagram's official API, which is built for professional accounts. Later's Auto Publish is for business and creator accounts. Buffer says auto-publishing, analytics and comment replies need an Instagram professional (Business or Creator) account linked to a Facebook Page, and personal accounts get notification publishing only. Planoly's Best Time to Post needs a Business or Creator account, and Flick uses Instagram's business account API. If you still have a personal Instagram account, switch it to a professional account before you start a trial.
How to choose
- List the formats you post every week. If Stories are a big part of your plan, choose a tool that auto-publishes them (Later, Buffer, Metricool, Iconosquare or Planoly) and check its post limits: Stories count toward Later's monthly post limit and toward Iconosquare's cap of 25 auto-published Instagram posts per day.
- Count your posts per month, including Stories. Later Starter allows 30 posts per profile per month, Iconosquare Starter 30 in total, Metricool Free 20, and Flick Solo 30 per social. Planoly's paid plans and Buffer's paid plans have no monthly cap (Buffer has a 5,000-per-channel fair-use limit).
- Decide where your link in bio will live. Later, Planoly, Buffer and Metricool include one. If you sell digital products from your bio, Planoly's Creator Store charges no transaction fees.
- Decide how much analytics you need. For client reports and competitor benchmarks, look at Iconosquare or Metricool. For hashtag-led growth, look at Flick.
- Price the plan you will actually use. Add up profiles, users and add-ons. A solo creator pays least on Planoly Starter, Buffer Essentials or a free plan; a small agency with five brands should compare Metricool Starter, Later Growth and Iconosquare Scale.
Final recommendations
- Best overall for Instagram scheduling: Later, for auto-publishing every format, a feed preview, Link in Bio and per-format best times on the entry plan.
- Best for grid planning and selling from your bio: Planoly, from $14/month billed annually with first comment and a zero-fee storefront.
- Best free plan and lowest cost per account: Buffer, free for 3 channels and $5 per channel on Essentials.
- Best for analytics on a budget and small agencies: Metricool, with up to 5 brands from $20/month billed annually.
- Best for in-depth Instagram analytics and reporting: Iconosquare.
- Best for hashtag research: Flick.
Conclusion
The best Instagram scheduling tool is the one that publishes your formats automatically and gives you the planning tools you would otherwise piece together. Later does that most completely for Instagram-first creators and brands: every format, a feed preview, Link in Bio, hashtag tools and best times on the entry plan, as long as 30 posts per profile per month is enough. Planoly is the better buy for grid planners who sell from their bio, Buffer for the lowest cost, Metricool and Iconosquare for analytics, and Flick for hashtags. Run a trial with a real week of posts, including a Story and a carousel, before you commit.
