A small business rarely has a social media manager. More often it is the owner, or one to three people who also run email, the website and the shop floor. The right social media tool for that team is one that gets a week of posts scheduled in an hour, publishes to Instagram and TikTok without phone reminders, shows replies in one place, and costs less than a part-time freelancer.
This guide compares seven social media tools for small businesses in 2026: Buffer, Metricool, Publer, Later, SocialBee, Canva and Hootsuite. Canva is the odd one out: a design tool with a built-in Content Planner, included because many small businesses already pay for it. We look at free plans, the real bill for a few accounts, Instagram and TikTok publishing, network coverage, the inbox, analytics and the cost of a second person. Prices are in USD and were checked on each vendor's own site in October 2026. We did not run these tools hands-on; everything below comes from vendor pricing pages, product pages and help centers.
Comparison Table
Pricing checked October 2026 on each vendor's site.
| Tool | Starting price | Pricing basis | Free plan or trial | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Buffer | $5/channel/month billed yearly ($6 monthly) | Per channel | Free plan (3 channels); 14-day trial | Simple, cheap scheduling across every network |
| Metricool | $20/month billed annually ($25 monthly) | Per number of brands | Free plan (1 brand) | Scheduling plus analytics on a budget |
| Publer | $4/account/month billed yearly ($5 monthly) | Per social account plus members | Free plan (3 accounts); 7 or 14-day trial | Lowest paid price for a few accounts |
| Later | $18.75/month billed yearly ($25 monthly) | Plan with Social Sets | 14-day trial | Instagram-first visual brands |
| SocialBee | $24.17/month billed yearly ($29 monthly) | Plan with profile limit | 14-day trial | Evergreen content recycling |
| Canva | Pro $144/year (about $12/month) or $18 monthly | Per person | Free design plan (no scheduling) | Design-first teams posting simple graphics |
| Hootsuite | $99/user/month billed annually | Per user | 14-day trial | All-in-one suite for bigger budgets |
Buffer review
Buffer has the simplest pricing model of any tool here: you pay for each channel you connect, and one social account is one channel. It covers more networks than any other tool in this guide, which matters for a local business that wants to post to Google Business Profile alongside Instagram and Facebook.
Key features
- Scheduling to Instagram, Facebook Pages, TikTok business profiles, LinkedIn pages and profiles, X, Pinterest, YouTube Shorts, Threads, Bluesky, Google Business Profile and Mastodon
- Instagram auto-publishing for images, videos, carousels, Stories and Reels; some Reels and Stories (with music or stickers, for example) and personal profiles fall back to a phone notification
- First comment scheduling for Instagram and LinkedIn on paid plans, plus a hashtag manager
- Community inbox for replying to comments on every plan; on Instagram it covers comments on posts and Reels, not DMs or Story replies
- Start Page, a link-in-bio page included on the free plan with some limits
- Integrations with Canva, Dropbox, Google Drive, Zapier, Make, WordPress and Bitly on every plan
Pricing
- Free: up to 3 channels, 10 scheduled posts per channel at a time, 1 user, 100 ideas, AI Assistant and 30 days of insights.
- Essentials: $5 per channel/month billed yearly, or $6 billed monthly, for channels 1 to 10. Rates drop from the 11th channel. Adds unlimited posts (with a fair-use cap of 5,000 per channel), first comments, the hashtag manager, unlimited analytics history, reports and UTM tracking. 1 user.
- Team: $10 per channel/month billed yearly, or $12 monthly. Adds unlimited team members, access levels, approval workflows and branded reports.
With 3 channels, Essentials costs $15/month billed yearly ($18 monthly) and Team $30 ($36). Once you upgrade, every connected channel is billed, including the 3 that were free. Paid plans come with a 14-day trial, and nonprofits get 50% off.
Pros
- A free plan that is genuinely usable for a business on 3 networks
- The broadest network support here, including Google Business Profile, Threads and Bluesky
Cons
- The inbox replies to comments only; Instagram DMs are not included
- A second person, or approvals, means the Team plan at double the per-channel rate
- The bill rises with each channel, so 10 channels on Team is $100/month billed yearly
Who it's for: owners and small teams who want reliable scheduling across many networks at a predictable price, and who handle DMs in the native apps.
Who should skip it: businesses that live in Instagram DMs and want them in one inbox, and teams that need deep analytics or competitor tracking.
Metricool review
Metricool combines a planner with unusually deep analytics for its price. Its pricing is unusual: you pay by the number of brands, where a brand is one business with one profile on each network. For an owner with one or two small businesses, the Starter plan covers everything for a single price.
Key features
- Free plan for one brand with auto-publishing, an inbox, AI assistant and 20 scheduled posts per month
- Instagram posts, carousels, Stories and Reels that publish automatically, without phone notifications, plus scheduling for Instagram Trial Reels
- Inbox covering Instagram, Facebook, Google Business Profile, TikTok, YouTube and LinkedIn
- Analytics with unlimited history on paid plans, Reels and Stories analytics, hashtag analysis, competitor tracking (up to 100 profiles) and PDF or PPT reports, including automated monthly reports
- SmartLinks link-in-bio pages on every plan
- Flows for comment-to-DM and keyword DM replies, which Metricool offers at no extra cost for a limited time
Pricing
- Free: 1 brand, every network except LinkedIn and X, 20 scheduled posts per month, 5 competitor profiles and 30 days of analytics.
- Starter: $20/month billed annually or $25 monthly for up to 5 brands; $36/month billed annually or $45 monthly for up to 10 brands. Unlimited posts (fair use) and unlimited analytics history.
- Advanced: $53/month billed annually or $67 monthly for 15 brands, rising to $159 annually or $210 monthly for 50 brands. Adds team and client management, roles, a post approval system, custom report templates, a Looker Studio connector and API access.
Annual billing saves up to 24%. LinkedIn is available on paid plans, and X needs a paid add-on. Google Business Profile is limited to one location per brand.
Pros
- The strongest free plan here for a single brand, with an inbox included
- Analytics, competitor tracking and reports that most rivals charge more for
- One Starter price covers up to 5 brands
Cons
- No LinkedIn on the free plan, and X costs extra on paid plans
- Post approvals are only on Advanced, from $53/month billed annually
- The free plan's 20 posts per month runs out quickly across several networks
Who it's for: small businesses that want to see what is working, and owners who run more than one small brand.
Who should skip it: businesses that post mainly to X, and teams that need approvals on a tight budget.
Publer review
Publer prices each social account separately and adds a small fee for each extra team member, which makes it the cheapest paid tool here for a business with a handful of accounts.
Key features
- Scheduling to Instagram Business and Creator accounts, Facebook profiles, pages and groups, TikTok, LinkedIn, X (paid plans), Pinterest, YouTube, Threads, Bluesky, Google Business Profile, Mastodon, Telegram and WordPress
- Instagram auto-posting for single images, Reels, Stories and carousels, with a notification option for Stories and Reels that need music or stickers
- Drag-and-drop feed preview for Instagram and TikTok, on the free plan too
- First comments and threads on paid plans
- Linkie, a link-in-bio page that updates with your Publer posts, on every plan
- Bulk scheduling from a CSV file, a bulk media uploader and post recycling for evergreen content (recycling on Business)
Pricing
Prices from Publer's pricing calculator:
- Free: 3 social accounts (no X), 1 user, 10 scheduled posts per account, 25 drafts and 24 hours of post history.
- Professional: $5/month for 1 account, $12 for 3 or $40 for 10, billed monthly. Billed yearly: $4, $9.60 or $28.80 a month. Adds unlimited scheduling, first comments, unlimited workspaces, RSS and X.
- Business: $10, $21 or $70 a month billed monthly for 1, 3 or 10 accounts; $8, $16.80 or $50.40 billed yearly. Adds analytics and reports, best times to post, competitor analysis (up to 10 competitors), hashtag analytics, post recycling, unlimited AI and API access.
- Enterprise: quoted and billed yearly.
Each added team member costs extra: the calculator showed $2/month on Professional and $3/month on Business when billed monthly. Every 10th account and every 10th member is included at no charge. Professional has a 7-day trial, Business a 14-day trial, and paid plans have a 14-day money-back guarantee.
Pros
- The lowest price here for 3 to 10 accounts
- Grid preview and link in bio on the free plan
Cons
- Publer's pricing page does not list a unified social inbox for replying to comments and DMs
- Analytics, best times and recycling need Business
- The free plan excludes X and keeps only 24 hours of post history
Who it's for: cost-conscious small businesses and solo marketers who want strong scheduling for a few accounts.
Who should skip it: businesses that want to answer comments and DMs from the same tool they schedule in.
Later review
Later's scheduling product, Later Social, is built around a visual calendar and Instagram planning tools. Plans include Social Sets, where one set is one profile each on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Pinterest, LinkedIn, YouTube, Threads and Snapchat. For a single brand, the Starter plan covers all eight for one price.
Key features
- Visual calendar with a drag-and-drop feed preview to arrange posts before they go live
- Instagram posts, Stories and Reels with Auto Publish for business and creator accounts, a notification option for adding music and stickers, and Reels audio
- Link in Bio on every plan, with unlimited buttons, up to 5 links per Instagram post, a shoppable feed, email capture and no Later branding
- Personalized best times to post for Instagram Feed, Reels and Stories on every plan
- Hashtag search and suggestions, and hashtags as the first comment when auto-publishing
- Social inbox for Instagram DMs, comments and mentions, Facebook DMs and comments, and TikTok comments on Growth and Scale
Pricing
- Starter: $25/month, or $18.75/month billed yearly. 1 Social Set, 1 user, 30 posts per profile per month, 3 months of analytics. Extra users and sets cannot be added.
- Growth: $50/month, or $37.50 billed yearly. 2 Social Sets, 2 users, 180 posts per profile per month, 1 year of analytics, social inbox, internal and external approvals, and Instagram Shop product tagging. Extra Social Sets cost $15/month ($11.25 billed yearly) and extra users $5/month ($3.75 billed yearly).
- Scale: $110/month, or $82.50 billed yearly. 6 Social Sets, 4 users, unlimited posts, 2 years of analytics, cross-profile reports, Meta Ads analytics and competitive benchmarking.
Yearly billing is 25% off. There is a 14-day trial with no credit card, but no ongoing no-cost plan.
Pros
- The most complete Instagram planning tools on an entry plan
- One Social Set covers 8 networks, including Snapchat
- Link in Bio with shopping and email capture on every plan
Cons
- X, Bluesky and Google Business Profile are not in Later's supported networks
- Starter allows 30 posts per profile per month and one user
- The inbox and approvals start on Growth
Who it's for: shops, salons, restaurants, studios and creators whose customers find them on Instagram, TikTok and Pinterest.
Who should skip it: local businesses that rely on Google Business Profile posts, and anyone who posts often to X.
SocialBee review
SocialBee is designed around content categories. You sort posts into categories such as tips or promotions, set a weekly schedule for each, and SocialBee fills the calendar, recycling evergreen posts and expiring time-sensitive ones.
Key features
- Content categories with evergreen recycling, expiring posts and RSS sources
- AI Copilot that drafts a social media strategy and posts, with unlimited AI captions and images on every plan
- Instagram carousels of up to 10 images or videos, Reels with cover images, Stories and collab posts that publish automatically
- First comment scheduling and Instagram grid preview on every plan
- Inbox for comments, mentions and DMs on Facebook Pages and Instagram Business, comments and mentions on Threads, LinkedIn company pages and X, and YouTube comments
Pricing
- Bootstrap: $29/month or $290/year (about $24.17/month). 5 social profiles, 1 user, 1 workspace, 10 content categories, 3 months of analytics, inbox, grid preview and first comment.
- Accelerate: $49/month or $490/year (about $40.83/month). 10 profiles, 1 user, advanced analytics with 2 years of data, hashtag organizer, bulk editor, CSV uploads and post approvals. SocialBee pitches it at small businesses ready to grow.
- Pro: $99/month or $990/year (about $82.50/month). 25 profiles, 3 users per workspace, 5 workspaces, branded report exports.
- Agency plans: from $179/month, or $149/month billed annually, for 50 profiles.
Add-ons: an extra user or workspace costs $10/month, and 5 extra profiles $15/month. Yearly billing is 16% off. The 14-day trial gives full Pro access with no credit card, and there is a 30-day money-back guarantee.
Pros
- Content categories keep a queue full with less weekly effort
- Inbox, first comment and grid preview on the entry plan
- A long money-back window and a trial with every Pro feature
Cons
- No plan without a monthly fee
- Bootstrap and Accelerate include one user, so approvals with a colleague need a $10/month user add-on
- The hashtag organizer and bulk tools start on Accelerate
Who it's for: owners who want to post consistently from a bank of evergreen content, and small teams that want AI help drafting posts.
Who should skip it: businesses that only post a few times a week and would be fine on a free plan elsewhere.
Canva review
Canva is a design platform first. Its Content Planner, in Pro and Business, schedules a finished design to social media without exporting it. It is not a full social media manager, and Canva's help center lists clear limits.
Key features
- Design editor with 1.6M+ templates, premium templates on Pro and Brand Kits for logos, colors and fonts
- Content Planner to schedule designs to Facebook Pages, Instagram Business accounts, X (listed as Twitter), LinkedIn, Pinterest, Slack and Tumblr
- Per-post insights for impressions, clicks, likes and comments
- Up to 80 connected social accounts per user on a team
Limits to know
Canva's help center says Instagram scheduling supports single image or video posts only. Stories and Reels cannot be scheduled (Canva suggests sharing them from the mobile app), and carousels are not supported. Instagram scheduling needs an Instagram Business account (not a Creator account) linked to a Facebook Page, has to be done from a desktop browser, and allows up to 25 posts in a rolling 24 hours. Each design can be scheduled to one platform at a time. TikTok, YouTube, Threads, Bluesky and Google Business Profile are not in Canva's supported list, and there is no social inbox.
Pricing
- Free: design editor, 1.6M+ templates, 5GB storage and up to 20 AI uses. Social content scheduling is not included.
- Pro: $144/year (about $12/month) or $18/month, for one person. Content Planner, 5 Brand Kits, premium templates and AI tools, 100GB.
- Business: $250/year or $25/month per person. Everything in Pro plus team admin, 100 Brand Kits, approvals and 500GB.
- Enterprise: contact sales.
Yearly billing saves from 16%. Canva offers a trial of Pro and Business, but the pricing page does not say how long it lasts.
Pros
- Design and scheduling in one place, with no export step
- Good value if you already pay for Pro for design
- Brand Kits keep every post on brand
Cons
- No scheduled Instagram Stories, Reels or carousels
- No TikTok, YouTube, Threads or Google Business Profile
- No inbox, and analytics are per post rather than reports
Who it's for: owners who design everything in Canva and mostly post single images or videos to Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and Pinterest.
Who should skip it: any business that relies on Reels, TikTok or Stories, or that wants comments and DMs in one inbox. Pair Canva with a scheduler instead: Buffer, for example, can import content directly from Canva on every plan.
Hootsuite review
Hootsuite, which now markets itself as Hootsuite Social OS, is the most complete platform in this guide. Even its entry plan includes an inbox, competitor benchmarking and social listening. The trade-off is price: it charges per user, and its entry plan costs several times more than any other tool here.
Key features
- Scheduling to Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, LinkedIn, X, Pinterest, YouTube, Threads, Bluesky and Google Business Profile
- Instagram photos, videos, carousels, Stories and Reels
- All-in-one inbox on every plan, including WhatsApp; DM automations and AI smart replies from Professional
- Reports, industry benchmarking, best times to post and competitor benchmarking (5 competitors on Standard, 20 above) on every plan
- Social listening with Quick Search: 7 days of data on Standard, 30 days and trend forecasting from Professional
- Wisdom AI with 100 AI credits a month for captions, hashtags and ideas
Pricing
- Standard: $99 per user/month billed annually, 10 social accounts.
- Professional: $199 per user/month billed annually, unlimited social accounts, custom reports and report scheduling.
- Advanced: $399 per user/month billed annually, with post approval workflows, internal comments, inbox assignment and branded reports.
- Enterprise: custom pricing.
One user on Standard is $1,188 a year. Hootsuite's FAQ says monthly billing costs more per user, but the plans page does not show that price. The 14-day trial needs no credit card but limits posts per day and blocks bulk scheduling.
Pros
- Inbox, benchmarking and listening on the entry plan
- Every major network covered
Cons
- By far the most expensive option for a small business
- Approval workflows only on Advanced, at $399 per user/month billed annually
- No monthly price published on the plans page
Who it's for: established small businesses that treat social as a main sales channel, handle a lot of messages and want listening and benchmarking in one place.
Who should skip it: most owners and one to three person teams, who will get scheduling, an inbox and reports for a fraction of the cost elsewhere.
What it costs a small business
Each tool charges on a different basis. Here is the yearly cost for 3 social accounts and one user, billed yearly, on the cheapest paid plan that covers them.
| Tool | Plan | Yearly cost for 3 accounts, 1 user |
|---|---|---|
| Publer | Professional | $115.20 |
| Canva | Pro (scheduling only, limited formats) | $144 |
| Buffer | Essentials | $180 |
| Later | Starter | $225 |
| Metricool | Starter (up to 5 brands) | $240 |
| SocialBee | Bootstrap (up to 5 profiles) | $290 |
| Hootsuite | Standard | $1,188 |
If 3 accounts and basic scheduling is all you need, Buffer, Publer and Metricool also have free plans that cover it: Buffer and Publer allow 3 accounts, and Metricool allows one brand across every network except LinkedIn and X.
Adding a second person changes the picture. Buffer's Team plan doubles the per-channel rate to $10 billed yearly. Publer adds a small fee per member. Later needs Growth ($37.50/month billed yearly) for 2 users. SocialBee charges $10/month per extra user. Canva Business is $250/year per person. Hootsuite charges another $99/month billed annually for each user.
Instagram and TikTok publishing
For most small businesses, Instagram is the network that decides the tool. Buffer, Later, Metricool, Publer, SocialBee and Hootsuite all schedule Instagram Reels, Stories and carousels. Metricool says its Instagram posts publish automatically with no notifications. Buffer, Later and Publer auto-publish too, with a phone notification option or fallback for posts that need music, stickers or other features Instagram's API does not support. Canva is the exception: its help center says it schedules only single image and video posts to Instagram.
For planning the look of your grid, Later, Metricool, Publer and SocialBee offer a drag-and-drop feed or grid preview, and Publer's is on its free plan. First comment scheduling is on every SocialBee plan, on Buffer's and Publer's paid plans, and Later posts hashtags as the first comment when it auto-publishes.
Every tool here except Canva lists TikTok, and Publer's grid preview covers TikTok as well as Instagram.
Network coverage
| Tool | TikTok | X | Google Business Profile | Threads | Bluesky | |||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Buffer | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Metricool | Yes | Yes | Yes | Paid plans | Paid add-on | Yes (one location per brand) | Yes | Yes |
| Publer | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Paid plans | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Later | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Not listed | Not listed | Yes | Not listed |

| Canva | Business accounts, single image or video | Pages | Not listed | Yes | Yes | Not listed | Not listed | Not listed |
| Hootsuite | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
For a local business such as a clinic or restaurant, Google Business Profile posts can matter as much as Instagram.
Engagement inbox
Hootsuite includes an all-in-one inbox on every plan. Metricool's inbox is on its free plan and covers Instagram, Facebook, Google Business Profile, TikTok, YouTube and LinkedIn. SocialBee's inbox is on every plan and handles comments, mentions and DMs for Facebook Pages and Instagram Business accounts. Later's social inbox, with Instagram and Facebook DMs, starts on Growth. Buffer's community inbox is on every plan but replies to comments only; Instagram DMs and Story replies are not included. Publer's pricing page does not list a social inbox, and Canva has none.
Analytics and reports
Metricool is the analytics leader in this group for small budgets: unlimited history on paid plans, competitor tracking for up to 100 profiles, PDF and PPT reports and automated monthly reports, from $20/month billed annually. Hootsuite adds benchmarking to every plan at a much higher price. Buffer Essentials includes unlimited history and reports. Later and SocialBee keep 3 months on their entry plans, Publer's analytics start on Business, and Canva shows per-post insights only.
Team and approvals
Buffer offers approvals on Team, at $10 per channel per month billed yearly. Later includes internal and external approvals on Growth. SocialBee's post approval system starts on Accelerate ($49/month), though you need a $10/month user add-on for a second person. Publer offers approval workflows through added members. Metricool reserves approvals for Advanced, and Hootsuite for Advanced at $399 per user per month billed annually. Canva Business includes design approvals.
How to choose
- List your networks first. If you post to Google Business Profile or X, rule out Later. If you rely on Reels, Stories or TikTok, Canva alone will not be enough.
- Count accounts and people. A solo owner with 3 accounts can start free on Buffer, Publer or Metricool. Two or three people should price the plan that adds users or approvals, not just the entry plan.
- Decide where you will reply to messages. If Instagram and Facebook DMs matter, choose a tool with a DM inbox on your plan: Metricool, SocialBee, Hootsuite, or Later on Growth.
- Think about how much you post. Later Starter allows 30 posts per profile per month and Metricool Free 20 posts per month in total. Daily posting across several networks needs a paid plan with unlimited posts.
- Use the free plans and trials. Buffer, Publer and Metricool have free plans; Later, SocialBee and Hootsuite offer 14-day trials. Schedule a real week of posts before you pay.
Final recommendations
- Best overall for small businesses: Buffer.
- Best for analytics: Metricool.
- Best budget paid plan: Publer, at $9.60/month billed yearly for 3 accounts.
- Best for Instagram-first brands: Later.
- Best for evergreen content: SocialBee.
- Best for design-first teams: Canva, for simple feed graphics.
- Best all-in-one suite: Hootsuite, if your budget allows.
Conclusion
Most small businesses do not need an enterprise social suite. They need a calendar that publishes reliably to the networks their customers use, at a price that makes sense for a few accounts and one to three people. Buffer is the best starting point for most: free for 3 channels, $5 per channel per month billed yearly after that, and it covers every major network including Google Business Profile. Choose Metricool for analytics and a free inbox, Publer if price is everything, Later if Instagram is your shop window, and SocialBee for evergreen content. Keep Canva for design, and pair it with a scheduler if you post Reels or Stories.
