Why Live Chat for Shopify Matters in 2026

Live chat on a Shopify store does two jobs. Before the sale it answers the questions that stop a checkout: sizing, stock, shipping times, return rules. After the sale it handles "where is my order?", address changes, cancellations and refunds. The second job is where most of the time goes, and it is where these tools differ most.

Three things changed the buying decision in 2026.

  • AI agents are now billed by usage. Most vendors charge per AI conversation or per resolution, on top of the plan. Gorgias charges $0.90 to $1.00 per automated interaction, Zendesk $1.50 to $2.00 per extra automated resolution, and Re:amaze $0.85 per extra resolution. A cheap plan can become an expensive one if the AI handles a lot of chats.
  • Order actions moved into the chat. The better tools now let an agent, and sometimes the AI, look up an order, cancel it, refund it or edit the address without opening the Shopify admin. That saves minutes on every ticket.
  • Shopify's free option got stronger. Shopify Inbox is still a free app made by Shopify, now sold as "an AI sales associate". Its opt-in Inbox agent recommends products, adds them to the cart and looks up orders for signed-in customers. It does not do refunds or order edits.

This guide compares six options for Shopify merchants: Tidio, Gorgias, Shopify Inbox, Crisp, Re:amaze and Zendesk. All prices are in US dollars and were checked on each vendor's pricing page and Shopify App Store listing in October 2026.

Tidio review

What it is: Tidio is a live chat and helpdesk app built for small online stores. It combines chat, email, Instagram and WhatsApp in one inbox and adds Lyro, its AI agent, as a separate paid add-on.

Pricing (USD):

  • Free: 50 billable conversations a month, 10 seats, and your first 50 Lyro AI conversations free for life.
  • Starter: $29/month, or $290/year ($24.17/month). 100 conversations a month.
  • Growth: from $59/month, or $49.17/month billed annually, for 250 conversations, with higher volume tiers.
  • Plus: from $300/month plus usage. Premium: contact sales.
  • Lyro AI Agent: from $32.50/month billed annually for 50 AI conversations, sold in tiers up to 1,000 a month. Lyro pauses when you reach the limit.
  • Flows (automation): from $24.17/month billed annually.
  • 7-day trial on paid plans.

Shopify integration: Tidio's Shopify App Store listing says agents can see orders and live carts and send products, discounts or order updates from the inbox. Tidio's help center says agents can cancel orders, submit refunds and edit shipping addresses during a chat. The listing also says Lyro "acts within your rules" on order status, refunds, cancellations and order edits, and can compare products and add items to the cart on product pages.

Pros:

  • A real free plan with 10 seats.
  • Order actions from the inbox without opening the Shopify admin.
  • Not priced per seat, so adding part-time staff costs nothing extra.

Cons:

  • You pay by conversation volume. A sale weekend can push you into the next tier.
  • Lyro is billed separately, with its own conversation quota.
  • After Growth, the next step is Plus at $300/month or more.

Who should use it: Small and mid-sized Shopify stores that want to start free, keep human chat cheap, and add AI in small blocks when they are ready.

Who should avoid it: Brands with thousands of tickets a month across email, SMS and voice. A full helpdesk such as Gorgias or Zendesk will fit better.

Gorgias review

What it is: Gorgias is a helpdesk built for Shopify brands. It puts email, live chat, SMS, social and voice in one inbox, with the customer's Shopify orders beside every ticket.

Pricing (USD): Gorgias prices by billable tickets, not seats.

  • Starter: $10/month (monthly only), 50 tickets, 3 agents, $0.40 per extra ticket.
  • Basic: $60/month, or $600/year ($50/month). 300 tickets, up to 500 agents, $40 per extra 100 tickets.
  • Pro: $360/month, or $3,600/year ($300/month). 2,000 tickets, up to 500 agents, $36 per extra 100 tickets.
  • Advanced: $900/month, or $9,000/year ($750/month). 5,000 tickets, up to 500 agents, $36 per extra 100 tickets.
  • Enterprise: custom quote, for more than 5,000 conversations a month.
  • AI Agent: $0.90 per automated interaction on annual contracts, $1.00 on monthly contracts. Each AI Agent interaction also counts as a helpdesk ticket.
  • 7-day free trial, no payment details needed.

Shopify integration: The Shopify App Store listing says agents can "edit orders, refund and cancel inside tickets". The AI Agent handles FAQs and order questions, with actions you control.

Pros:

  • The most complete set of order actions in this guide.
  • Unlimited agents from Basic up, so seasonal staff do not add seat fees.
  • A full multichannel helpdesk, not only a chat widget.

Cons:

  • Ticket billing is hard to forecast. A shipping delay can double your tickets in a week.
  • AI conversations are billed twice in effect: once as an AI interaction and once as a ticket.
  • No free plan, and Basic to Pro is a jump from $60 to $360 a month.

Who should use it: Shopify brands with a few hundred tickets a month or more, several support channels, and a team that wants to resolve order problems without switching tabs.

Who should avoid it: Very small stores with few chats. Tidio's free plan or Shopify Inbox cost less for the same basic job.

Shopify Inbox review

What it is: Shopify Inbox is Shopify's own chat app. It has not been retired or renamed. It is still listed on the Shopify App Store as a free app by Shopify, now pitched as "an AI sales associate for your online store". You manage it from the Inbox page in the Shopify admin and the Inbox desktop and mobile apps.

Pricing: Free. Shopify Inbox is available only to stores on the Basic, Grow, Advanced or Shopify Plus plan.

The Inbox agent: The AI part is opt-in. Until you turn it on, chats go to your staff. Once on, it answers questions about products, availability, pricing, shipping, returns and policies from your catalog, knowledge base and store content. It can suggest products, add them to the customer's cart and look up orders, but only after the customer signs in. It replies in the customer's language. It needs an active online store and new customer accounts; stores on legacy customer accounts keep chats with staff.

Shopify integration: The customer profile shows whether the shopper is new or returning, their location and their order details, but only for signed-in customers. Staff can share discount codes that you created beforehand; one click applies them to the cart. Shoppers can check order status in the chat with their order number and email.

Limits: Shopify's help center says the Inbox agent only operates in your online store's chat widget. It handles common shopping questions and hands complex or sensitive ones to staff. If no staff are available, it shares your store's email address. Shopify's documentation describes no refund, cancellation or order edit actions in Inbox, so those stay in the Shopify admin. Suggested replies for staff and AI instant answers are English only.

Pros:

  • Free, with no usage fees for the AI agent.
  • No setup of integrations; it already knows your catalog and policies.
  • Built-in analytics such as orders assisted and buyer satisfaction.

Cons:

  • Chat only. No shared email, social or SMS inbox.
  • No refunds, cancellations or order edits from the chat.
  • Not available on the Shopify Starter plan.

Who should use it: New and small stores, and any store that mostly wants pre-sale help on product pages.

Who should avoid it: Stores where post-purchase questions (refunds, changes, returns) make up most of the support load.

Crisp review

What it is: Crisp is a shared inbox and live chat tool with a Shopify app. Its pricing is a flat monthly fee per workspace with a fixed number of seats.

Pricing (monthly, per workspace, VAT not included):

  • Free: 2 seats, 100 customer profiles, website chat, Shopify data sync, mobile apps.
  • Mini: $45/month. 4 seats, 5,000 profiles, $5 of AI credits included (Crisp estimates about 90 automated conversations).
  • Essentials: $95/month. 10 seats, 50,000 profiles, $25 of AI credits (about 450 automated conversations), a trainable AI agent, WhatsApp, Instagram and SMS.
  • Plus: $295/month. 20 seats, 200,000 profiles, $75 of AI credits (about 1,350 automated conversations).
  • Extra seats cost $10/month. Yearly billing can be turned on in the app, but yearly prices are not published. 14-day trial on paid plans.

Shopify integration: Crisp's help center says operators can see previous Shopify orders, order status, shipping and tracking, and cart context next to the conversation. Crisp's Shopify page says refunds can be issued from Crisp. Its AI agent has three Shopify tools you can switch on one by one: get order details, get the customer's default address, and update the shipping address while the order can still be changed. Crisp advises turning on identity verification before the AI shares private data or changes addresses.

Pros:

  • Predictable bills: the price does not change with chat volume.
  • 10 seats for $95/month is cheap for a growing team.
  • Free plan includes Shopify data sync.

Cons:

  • The price of extra AI credits is not published on the pricing page.
  • WhatsApp, Instagram and SMS start at Essentials.
  • Fewer documented order actions than Gorgias or Tidio (no cancel or edit beyond the shipping address).

Who should use it: Teams of 3 to 10 people who want one fixed bill, order context in chat, and a modest amount of AI.

Who should avoid it: Stores that need agents to cancel or edit orders in the chat every day.

Re:amaze review

What it is: Re:amaze is a helpdesk and live chat tool with a Shopify app called Re:amaze AI Helpdesk & Chat. It is built to run several brands from one inbox.

Pricing (USD):

  • Basic: $29 per team member/month, or $26.10 billed annually. 1 brand. 5 AI resolutions per user per month.
  • Pro: $49 per team member/month, or $44.10 billed annually. Unlimited brands, SMS and voice. 10 AI resolutions per user per month.
  • Plus: $69 per team member/month, or $62.10 billed annually. 20 AI resolutions per user per month.
  • Starter: $59/month flat with unlimited team members, limited to 500 responded conversations a month.
  • Extra AI resolutions cost $0.85 each. Re:amaze AI is labeled beta.
  • 14-day free trial with Plus features, no card required.

Shopify integration: The Shopify App Store listing says agents can manage, modify and create Shopify orders from support chats. The live dashboard shows shoppers' browsing activity and lets you message them.

Pros:

  • Order creation and editing from the chat.
  • Unlimited brands from Pro, useful for merchants with several Shopify stores.
  • The lowest published AI overage rate here, at $0.85 per resolution.

Cons:

  • Per-seat pricing: 5 agents on Pro cost $245/month billed monthly.
  • Starter's 500-conversation cap can be tight for busy stores.
  • AI is still marked beta.

Who should use it: Merchants with two or more stores, or small teams that want order editing in chat at a modest per-seat cost.

Who should avoid it: Large teams with many agents, where per-seat costs add up faster than ticket-based or flat pricing.

Zendesk review

What it is: Zendesk is a general customer service suite used by companies of every size. Shopify support comes through a Zendesk sidebar app rather than being built into the core product.

Pricing (USD per agent per month):

  • Support Team: $19 billed annually, or $25 monthly. Email and ticketing; messaging and live chat are not listed as a feature on this plan.
  • Suite Team: $55 billed annually, or $69 monthly. Includes messaging and live chat. 5 automated resolutions per agent per month.
  • Suite Professional: $115 billed annually, or $149 monthly. 10 automated resolutions per agent per month.
  • Suite Enterprise: contact sales.
  • Extra automated resolutions: $1.50 each committed, $2.00 pay-as-you-go.
  • Copilot add-on: $50 per agent/month billed annually, Professional and up.
  • 14-day free trial.

Shopify integration: Zendesk's help center says the Shopify sidebar app shows order information in the ticket and lets agents process refunds and cancellations, once an admin enables that option. Zendesk notes that the old Zendesk Chat is being retired and the Zendesk Chat for Shopify app is no longer on the Shopify App Store, so live chat now runs through Zendesk messaging. For the AI agent, a Zendesk help article describes building an API call step to return Shopify order status, which is more setup than the Shopify-first tools here. The Zendesk listing on the Shopify App Store also has the lowest rating of this group.

Pros:

  • A mature help desk with strong routing, SLAs and reporting.
  • Refunds and cancellations from the ticket.
  • Fits companies that sell on Shopify plus other channels, stores or B2B.

Cons:

  • Per-agent pricing: 5 agents on Suite Team cost $275/month billed annually.
  • More admin and setup than any other tool here.
  • Shopify AI order lookups need custom configuration.

Who should use it: Larger retailers with a dedicated support team, several sales channels and existing Zendesk experience.

Who should avoid it: Small Shopify stores. You will pay more and set up more than you need.

Head-to-Head Comparison

Ease of use

Shopify Inbox is the easiest: install it, and it already knows your products and policies. Tidio and Crisp are quick to set up and simple to learn. Gorgias and Re:amaze take more setup because they are full helpdesks with rules, macros and several channels. Zendesk takes the most work.

Shopify features

Gorgias leads, with order edits, refunds and cancellations inside the ticket. Tidio and Re:amaze come close: Tidio offers cancel, refund and address edits, and Re:amaze can create and modify orders. Crisp shows full order context and can refund and update shipping addresses. Zendesk handles refunds and cancellations through its sidebar app. Shopify Inbox shows orders but does not act on them.

Pricing value

For a store with 2 or 3 people and fewer than 100 chats a month, Tidio's free or $29 plan and Shopify Inbox are the cheapest. For a team of 10, Crisp's $95 flat price and Gorgias Basic at $60 (if ticket volume stays near 300) are the best value. Per-seat tools (Re:amaze, Zendesk) get expensive as headcount grows.

Integrations and channels

Gorgias, Re:amaze and Zendesk cover email, chat, SMS, social and voice. Tidio covers chat, email, Instagram and WhatsApp. Crisp adds WhatsApp, Instagram and SMS from Essentials. Shopify Inbox covers only the online store chat.

Learning curve

Shopify Inbox and Tidio can be learned in an afternoon. Crisp and Re:amaze take a few days to set up rules and bots. Gorgias and Zendesk reward an admin who will spend time on rules, macros and views.

Fees to watch

  • Gorgias: extra tickets ($0.40 each on Starter, $36 to $40 per 100 on other plans) and AI interactions that also count as tickets.
  • Tidio: higher conversation tiers and a separate Lyro quota.
  • Zendesk: extra automated resolutions and the $50 Copilot add-on.
  • Crisp: extra seats at $10/month and unpublished AI credit top-ups.
  • Re:amaze: every new agent adds $29 to $69 a month.

How to Choose: Decision Framework

1. Count your chats and tickets. Look at last month's support volume across chat and email. Under 50 chats a month, start with Shopify Inbox or Tidio Free. A few hundred tickets a month across channels points to Gorgias Basic or Crisp.

2. Decide where refunds and order changes happen. If your team spends most of its time on cancellations, refunds and address changes, pick a tool that does them in the chat: Gorgias, Tidio or Re:amaze. If you are happy to do them in the Shopify admin, Shopify Inbox or Crisp are fine.

3. Count your people. Many part-time or seasonal agents favor tools that do not charge per seat: Gorgias (up to 500 agents from Basic), Tidio (10 seats on every listed plan up to Growth) or Re:amaze Starter. A small fixed team suits Crisp's flat price.

4. Price the AI honestly. Estimate how many chats the AI will handle each month and multiply by the vendor's rate. For example, 300 automated chats on Gorgias cost about $270 to $300 on top of the plan, and those chats also use up tickets. On Re:amaze, a 3-person Pro team gets 30 resolutions included; 300 resolutions would add about $230 at $0.85 each.

5. Check your Shopify plan. Shopify Inbox is not available on the Shopify Starter plan, and its AI agent needs new customer accounts.

6. Think about other stores and channels. Several Shopify stores point to Re:amaze or Gorgias. Selling beyond Shopify, with a large team, points to Zendesk.

The Verdict: Final Recommendations

Tidio is our pick for most Shopify stores. It has a free plan you can actually run a small store on, paid plans from $29/month, and order actions (refund, cancel, edit address) in the chat. Add Lyro when chat volume justifies it.

Choose Gorgias when support becomes a real job: hundreds of tickets a month, several channels, and agents who need to edit, refund and cancel orders all day. Budget for ticket overages and AI fees.

Choose Shopify Inbox if you want free chat and a free AI sales assistant, and you are fine doing refunds in the Shopify admin.

Choose Crisp if you want one fixed monthly bill for a team of up to 10 or 20.

Choose Re:amaze if you run more than one store or want to create orders from a chat.

Choose Zendesk if Shopify is one part of a bigger operation with a large support team.

Conclusion

For a Shopify merchant, the right live chat tool is the one that answers the order question without making your team leave the chat. Start by checking how many chats you get and how many of them are about orders after purchase. If the number is small, Shopify Inbox or Tidio Free cost nothing. If most of your work is refunds and changes, Tidio, Gorgias or Re:amaze will save the most time. Before you commit, run the free trial with your real order data and price the AI agent at your expected volume, because AI usage fees are now the biggest variable in what you will pay.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Shopify Inbox is listed as a free app by Shopify on the Shopify App Store, and its opt-in Inbox agent (AI) has no listed fee. It is available only to stores on the Basic, Grow, Advanced or Shopify Plus plan, and the AI agent needs an active online store and new customer accounts.
